A question about job cuts, and how a "job cut" is counted...
I resigned from my full-time job in August. The position has not been eliminated, but it has not been filled and probably won't be for at least a year. If the organization is rearranged so that job doesn't exist anymore, is that counted in job cuts? I didn't lose my job nor did I go on unemployment, but my buying power has been reduced because I don't have a regular full-time job anymore. Anyone have any ideas about this? And I wonder how many others are in a similar situation.

1. The Current Establishment Survey which the
BLS uses to calculate the jobs number released today basically counts heads or payrolls at companies.

So it is my understanding that your situation would likely be counted as a loss of payroll.

However the BLS used a different survey called the Current Population Survey to calculate the unemployment rate. If you resigned your full time job and are not actively seeking employment, you would likely be considered to have "left the workforce" as opposed to being classified as unemployed.

2. Thanks for the info. Reading your answer, I see that my question wasn't clearly worded
but you answered it anyway.

Do I count as an unemployed person? No. But is my unfilled, not-fired-from-or-laid-off-from job counted as a job cut? Probably yes.
