What does one do with an iPod that has a depleted battery that won't hold a charge?

1. You can have the batteries replaced.

and chant Steve Job's name a few hundred times, then they might releave of your phone so they can toss it in a box to ship overseas for a few weeks. then after those weeks of blessed and enforced silence they might allow you to have it back for a minimal charge...only enough for a down-payment of a house...

And if you're even slightly mechanically capable, you can replace them yourself. (I did it on a Mini.)

Doing so, of course, voids the Apple warranty, so don't do this if your unit is newish.

I replaced a cracked screen for my daughter and put in a new headphone jack/lockout assembly in mine.

12. Make sure the problem is with the battery before you pay to have it replaced...

The "power-in" contacts broke on my son's iPod so even plugging it in won't make it turn on. Apple, in all their brilliance, hard-soldered the most wear-prone component directly to the main board so I have to replace the whole damn thing.

13. My son's had the same problem

so we took it to the Apple store. It was about 3 weeks past the 1 year warrantee but they replaced it after I begged them to honor the warrantee. It all depends on who you get at the Genius bar at the Apple store but the guy I dealt with opened a big drawer of new ipods and pulled one out and gave it to us. A week later I was there begging for one for my daughter who had the prong thingies bend. That ipod was about 5 weeks past its year birthday, but after throwing a major tantrum the guy had enough of me and gave me a new one.
