“Well yeah,” drawled Senator Shelby when asked about the upcoming debate. “I don’t work for no Detroit or no union, so why should I care if it all goes down the tubes?”

Shelby was being interviewed by Larry Elder on local Mobile Alabama station WTF about the situation concerning the auto industry; and by extension the financial industry’s bailout. Senator Shelby was seated with Senators Corker, Kyl and Chambliss.

“Now the rest of these guys voted to give the banks all the money we got,” said Shelby. “I didn’t because I want to save some for Big Pharma and Energy. Gotta give them sumthin before it’s gone”

“Well, it’s about priorities, Richard,” Saxby Chambliss said. “The point is we all agree - give all the money out – just not to those damn union people and their workers!”

“Right!” they all said in unison, smiling and nodding to each other.

"We got a pool going to see how many trillions we can give out before the people wake up and shut it down," said Senator Kyl with thoughts of still being in the running going through his head.

“You brought up something at the hearings yesterday, Senator Corker,” said Larry Elder, ignoring Sen. Kyl. “And it’s helped all of us propagandists, um, I mean talk show hosts, clear up what’s going on. You pointed out correctly, and I’ll be repeating it every hour, that $19,000.00 of every car made goes to union dues. We – the talk show hosts – love it when you give us ammo like that. Helps us in our jobs. Now, what do you say to those traitorous, left wing, anti-Bush people out there that want congress to save jobs and have accountability for the money that is handed out?”

“We were never in this for them!” shouted Richard Shelby. “Not for one damn day! It’s not about them or their jobs… And they knew the risks when they voted for us – I say screw ‘em!”

With that the other Senators and the host nodded with satisfaction. Richard had summed up their position very succinctly.

The sarcasm tag itself is a little over the top and cheesy and cheapens the comedic impact of satire IMO.

I guess my thing is that if I write something, some people are going to love it, some are going to hate it any many will have no opinion.

You can't please everyone all of the time and for me personally I'd rather just have a "if you get it great, if not, fine" attitude. Of course it's annoying when someone doesn't get the joke but generally speaking I think that says more about them than me.

9. In this case they are being used to make fun of the right wing talking point about

the auto workers making $70 - $80 dollars per hour. If you meant in reality? It costs money to pay full time workers to represent you to the company. Lawyers, etc.

Aren't negotiations only every few years? It just seems like a lot of money (collectively), when couldn't you just keep an attorney on retainer to help negotiate every few years?

12. I'm not in a union, but I'm sure that there are negotiations going on all the time

in a large company. On an individual basis. And large unions cover numerous companies.

23. Company managements are constantly pushing the contract envelope. The unions need full time

people to hear complaints and accompany union members when they discuss grievances and/or disciplinary actions, etc. Also, the companies are always lobbying the politicians against unions and the unions need to keep up.

17. From your title, I thought the "us" elected was, well, us -- not a satire at all

I was expecting a piece along these lines: The Republicans said Obama was the most liberal Senator in the chamber. They said he was a socialist who wanted to redistribute the wealth. They said he'd raise taxes. They said his policy would be to cut and run from Iraq without waiting for the completion of Bush's project of building a Jeffersonian democracy there. They said (etc., etc.).

Having heard all those points, the American people elected him. The American people want the Presidency to be put in the hands of the most liberal Senator. So, with regard to those who are now cautioning Obama that he must govern from the center, I say "Screw 'em!" The American people knew the risks.
