5. Acer has a fine reputation.
Don't let the stinkin' mac hippies convince you to buy into their cult. ;-)

10. How much is it? And what sort of grief are you having?
I have not had that much grief with my Compaq presarios, of which I have had two (having to upgrade so I could get enough RAM to get DSL). I think those are only $500 or $600. But it depends on what you are trying to do.

11. Ignore the platform pushers. What are you doing with it?
The most important part of a computer purchase isn't the OS it runs, or the hardware underneath it, but is in determining it's suitability for its planned purpose. A Mac Mini will work fine if you just need an email and web surfing machine. It's not such a valid solution if you need it to run your dongle laden 3D Studio for PC software.

IMO, Acers are generally reliable machines, but then again I've never had problems with Dell's either. I owned an Acer laptop years ago and found it to be perfectly reliable...if a bit on the slow side. I've used Acer desktops several times and never experienced any issues with them. What does that mean for your purchase? Not much.

12. Lenovo has some netbooks on sale for $349
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/special-offers.workflow:ShowPromo?LandingPage=/All/US/Landing_pages/Sales/s10349&ipromoID=hpb00388&

They also have a 15" Thinkpad on sale for $499.

I'm sure Acer is a great machine but I'm an IBM/Lenovo fan. And you gotta admit, $349 is a sweet price.
