if you were to purchase a car tomorrow
We're having all this talk about the auto industry. Hypothetical situation. You win a sweepstakes, and the prize is a new car of your choice. Money is not an issue.

What would you choose, and why?

Big enough for our Great Pyrenees (although the window sitch isn't as fun for him as the Civic where he can put his whole head out the window).

And the 4 wheel drive is fabulous for our snow-covered driveway in the wintertime! :D

I would probably get a Prius. For a truck, a diesel model Ford F150(so I can run biodiesel in it).

However if I could get any car that I wanted, new or old, it would be a 1936 Packard Super 8 convertible:evilgrin:

140. that diesel F150 is fantasy, too.
I've seen F350s with the powerstroke, but never an F150. Not sure about the F250. The ideal (for me) would be a compact truck like the ranger, but with a crew cab and a smallish powerstroke diesel. Wake me up when Ford makes one.

7. that's a bad hypothetical.
It should be more like: "If you had a job, and you could afford a new car, and it was time for a new car, what would you buy right now?"

Me: Ford Focus. A buddy has one and he says it's ugly but GREAT.

The word I get from insiders is that Ford's are excellent on quality now.

10. I feel so much pressure now to say it is an American Car.
My fantasy dream car is to purchase a 1977 black Trans Am.
Second: an AMC Pacer.

Now, I would pick either the car I drive now, a RAV 4, or a black Porsche, and I have no idea who makes Porsche or if it is a foreign car.

I think sometimes people give us car buyers more credit than we deserve. I know what I like, but I don't always know who makes it.

Sorry to disappoint so many people.

We only have one economical (i.e. on the small side) vehicle now and my husband needs a slightly larger vehicle. I love my 2001 Focus, so I might upgrade, but that's about it.
I've driven a Malibu, which might be an alternative vehicle, but it's not as high as the Focus, which my husband can fit in, so we'll stay with that.

38. Toyota Echo is looking good to me or a Smart Car.
Right now, I'm thinking used. The Echo has a high reliability rating, good gas mileage and an engine that's as strong as the one I have now, on a smaller frame.

I think it would make me happy.

Then again, if I heard that the Smart Car was as reliable, and had decent performance, I'd consider it.

They're a total piece of shit, if you need to drive anywhere a snow flake may fall or the wind might blow.

There's a reason they stopped making the echo. Consumer Reports also gave them a horrible rating.

Edited on Thu Dec-11-08 10:35 PM by haruka3_2000
I've had at various points a Dodge Caravan, a Mercury Sable (sucked in many ways, but was decent in snow), Grand Cherokee and now a Saab 9-3. They were all a thousand times better in the snow, and I never needed snow tires or 300lbs of shit in the trunk.

Sorry, I think Echos suck. Don't get so touchy about your car. It's just a car.

BTW, an article from 2004 and a link that leads to a deleted article don't exactly prove your point. If the Echos were so great, why did Toyota replace them with the Scion and the Yaris after just a couple years?

I live on top of a mountain in West Virginia.

Drive 22 miles to work each day, come rain, snow, or ice.

You're full of crap.

edit: Toyota stopped selling Echos because the gas crunch had not hit and they were not selling.

When gas went up, they brought it back as the Yaris, which is what the Echo was called in Europe for a long time.

Maybe they didn't teach reading in your school.

I have no idea what Consumer Guide is. Never heard of it. Probably some pay for ratings type of outfit. Nice try, but I caught you lying again.

Consumer Reports, an independent rating organization, rated Echo one of most reliable cars:

http://money.cnn.com/2004/11/08/pf/autos/cr_auto_reliability/

Epinions: 4 and 1/2 out of 5 stars.

39. Oh... and having money to buy isn't sufficient.
Money to insure, money to fuel, money to maintain...

I don't think I could drive a car with poor gas mileage in good conscience. I've had my Honda for too long.

But if Ford brought back the Festiva... or if I could get one of the models that the big 3 sell in EUROPE (dammit!), I'd probably consider an American car.

And I'm very amused that, given the choice, most people here are choosing bigger, more comfortable cars.

Oh well, Terry Heinz drives an SUV.

Edited on Thu Dec-11-08 08:46 PM by SlicerDicer-
If I had the money? I would buy a 2005 D3 Audi A8 :)

Note: 2005 D3 A8 why 3 years old? Almost all the kinks are known and I can fix it myself with a little help :)
Now if this sweepstakes included service for 10 years fine shweet! I would get a 2010 A8L (sorry would hold rebate I want the D4 platform) LOL

Why? Cause I do not want a shit car. Sorry Detroit get your act together and stop making the following.

1) Blow Apart Interiors
2) Engines that are not worth a damn
3) Terrible drive trains that do awful in adverse conditions
4) Make them look halfway decent (I dont want a box or muscle looking car)
5) Boost the MPG to at least German standards if not higher
6) Get some good sales people

I can go on and on.. I just do not like American Cars.

52. The one I have now...2008 MINI Cooper S
We bought it Apr. '08, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. Saying this, I'm waiting for the "Buy Murrikan" activists to come in and flame me. However, I'm sorry, you can't pry my fun, MINI driving experience from my cold, dried, dead fingers.

We also have a '05 Jeep Liberty Turbo/Diesel, and a 2002 BMW 1100RS motorcycle. We're pretty happy with all of our vehicles, and we TRY to use all of them with an eye for conservation as much as possible. Everyday we consider weather, sunlight hours, loading needs (pets, the kitty and the lab don't ride well on a motorcycle), camping and traveling needs, etc. And we take trips with the Jeep, with the motorcycle attached for local transport.

125. I've owned 20 some odd vehicles in my life
My experience is if you like working on them or worrying with them buy a GM, they're easy to work on, :-) if you can put up with having to work on your vehicle and think they all break down sometimes then buy a Chrysler product, if you tend to just put up with the little shit and live with them the way they are then by all means buy a japanese. But if you're like I am and just wants a good vehicle that does what it was designed to do day in and day out then do not hesitate in getting on down to the Ford dealer. They only sell mighty fine vehicles that will not nickle and dime you to death. Fords are hard to work on mind you and when you do you'll need every tool in your tool box but the silver lining is they hardly ever need working on.

59. We just bought a Toyota Sienna. It was made in Indiana....
Edited on Thu Dec-11-08 08:58 PM by KoKo01
We had our Chryslery Mini-Van for 10 years. We put little money into it...Got between 18 and 19 mpg on it..depending on if we took long road trips in Summer with air-conditioning on or Winter when we had heat. It did good by us. One of the best cars we ever had. Went to trade it in to buy another Chrysler "Town & Country" and found that in the years since we bought our first one (after Mercedes-Benz bought them out) that the whole quality had deteriorated so much that we couldn't buy another one.

We went through the whole deal with the salesman and the price he came up with for what we felt was a CRAP version of our Original T&C Van...(cheap interior, horrible flat cheap, second row seats and the only upgrade was DVD and Global Positioning we'd have to pay to support every month) made us look to the highly rated Toyota Sienna. Seems the Sienna was giving us the quality interior with comfortable back seats and bells and whistles that Chrysler offered us for the SAME PRICE..with Toyota having much better interior that what Chrysler was offering in the much Downsized version of our Ten Year Old "Town & Country." We took the "Zero PerCent Financing" for half the downpayment figuring that in a CD we could earn at least 3% over the three-year payback and felt we were getting the same car we traded in with just a few more upgrades...and a couple of losses over our great "T&C" that was bought before Mercedes came in and cheapened everything.

171. It was made in Indiana...and I traded in my 10yr. old Chrysler Town &Country...
and couldn't buy a new one because the quality of interior and other stuff was so low grade after Mercedes bought them out and then Cerebus.. THEY RUINED CRYSLER. I needed a car with a warranty that I could trust, since I drive my cars so long. Who will be here after the next 10 years. I had to buy the Toyota. They gave me a better price than the downgraded Chrysler "T&C" that is their competitor.

Ack, tough question.

I do a lot of highway driving, so any hybrid model would not do me any good.

I actually think my new car, a 2005 Subaru Impreza wagon with a stick shift, is a perfect fit for me.

But a 2009 Impreza WRX wagon, with the turbo... Well, I wouldn't turn it down.

But I wouldn't turn down an all-wheel-drive Ford Fusion, either. Or a Ford Escape with the 5-speed stick.

Probably the Ford Escape with a V-6 and a stick.

It's the most popular American car. That means that when/if the auto industry finally dies in America, there'll still be plenty of parts out there in wrecking yards so I can keep the car running.

Incidentally, look for the popularity of auto "graveyards" to increase. There's at least four I know of here, and the used car parts business is steady and probably growing, now that people realize we won't be making cars any more.

132. I don't know car models well enough to say, but if money were no object I'd go American
hybrid of some sort, that meets appropriate standards for safety.

134. Lincoln Mark VIII
Why? Because I already own one, a 1995 model I bought second hand. It now has 206k miles on it and it is hands down the best automobile I have ever owned. Lincoln should have never stopped making this fine automobile, it is a pure joy to drive. It gets pretty good mileage for a muscle car too, 26-27 mpg highway, which is where I do most of my driving. I can't say enough good things about this car to begin to do it justice.

139. I don't see why not
It's about time for them to build another muscle oriented luxury coupe. With the advances in technology in the 10 years since the Mark VIII went out of production, I bet they could make it pretty fuel efficient too. The existing mustang platform is probably as good ma place as any to start.

138. 2010 Mercury Milan hybrid...on sale in January, I think.
Mostly because I've been blown away at how nice my 2007 non-hybrid Milan is. The car is really fun to drive and solid; I'm encouraged to try out the hybrid version based on a great experience.

144. Some kind of solid SUV.
I don't need a vehicle to drive every day--just for bi-annual trips to the vet, to the grocery store twice a month, and for getting to my Mom's house during bad winter weather, because she is in seriously poor health and there is no way that an ambulance could ever reach her if it's snowing or seriously muddy. For everyday trips, we take the city bus, and have done so since we moved closer to town.

We don't have a vehicle right now, but if we get one, I need something 4-wheel drive, dependable, very roomy (to fit my big dog and my big family,) able to take big tires with deep, snow-and-mud-eating tread, and with enough clearance to get over the big rocks and deep ruts on the road that leads to my Mom's house (which is more of a rough, steep ATV trail than a "road," and is about 1/3 of a mile long.) We used to have a modified '93 Explorer with a 3-inch lift, 33-inch BFG tires, and a winch; I cannot TELL you how many people we pulled out of mud and snow over the years that we had that thing. We were living on top of what was basically a strip mine at the time, waaaay out in rural Monongalia County, and my Mom *still* lives there. An SUV or a truck is pretty much a requirement for getting off of that mountain in the winter, and sometimes even in the spring because of the mud.

And I wouldn't feel the least bit bad about having an SUV or a truck, either. What we would lack in fuel efficiency, we would MORE than make up for with infrequency of use. Owning SUVs wouldn't be so bad if the people driving them only used them for trips in which they *needed* an SUV or a truck.

166. New Beetle
My SO and I talk about this all the time. We currently have a Taurus which he likes and I think Beetles are so damn cute but he hates them. I wanted one after I graduated from H.S. but by then they only had the convertible models and they were too expensive. We wouldn't buy one because I'm afraid that they are not very reliable. Unless I win the Lottery I'll have to be Beetle free.

My second choice would be a new Mustang. How weird am I? I'm not that into cars anymore. Our car gets paid off in Feb. and then we can concentrate on the Medical bills...YAY!

I'm slender, 5ft 4 inches, single, and only have to haul some groceries, a gym bag, lap top, etc. etc .

I've been doing the simple, smaller, keep it easy thing for three years now.

How much do you need? Not much. A really really small Smart Car.

And if they up the ante and throw in a house? Tumbleweed Tiny House Company. Check it out: http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/houses/enesti/

168. Cadillac CTS
Domestic car, well reviewed, it's not a high MPG car, but it does manage 26mpg highway, all while maintaining very good performance, and it even has all wheel drive available.

The only downside, the stronger engine isn't offered with a six speed manual, though maybe that will change since the upcoming Camaro has the same engine and offers a manual.
