Poll question: Who is going to be pissed off if they start bailing out states?
California has alot more ways to make money that Nebraska (tourism, oil, rich actors). It is absolute crap if Nebraska and other states that balance their budgets have to help bail out Cali and whoever else.

6. I didn't say we should burn California down
I just suggested they need to figure out how to make a sustainable budget.

11. Since California puts more money into the fed govt than it gets, and Nebraska takes
more than it gives, you'd better hope California (and Washington, and the others who put more in than they take) recovers fast.

2. California also pays a lot more in federal taxes proportional to the federal investment it receives

and it's absolute crap that some states get a fraction of their federal taxes back in services (federal highway funds etc.) while others get over 100% back.

I seem to recall that Ca was getting something like .50 cents for every dollar back while some of the fly over states were getting over a dollar back for every $1 they contributed.
I'll try to find a breakdown of who gets what.

Nebraska is important but Ca generates a *way* bigger portion of GDP.

5. we're a union of states
Nebraska benefits from California's contributions some years, California benefits from Nebraska in others. that's the way it's supposed to work.

8. I tell you what.. you let us keep the federal taxes we pay
and leave us the fuck alone.

All of us rich Californians :eyes: would do just fine keeping our money and letting the states like Nebraska take care of themselves.

Deal?

9. How are we supposed to get upset about that?
What's the point of even having a country if we don't stick up for each other?

State budgets are where most of the rubber meets the road, if they have to start gouging services then the whole society is in real danger of unraveling.

13. you are totally discounting
the sales tax that Nebraskans pay when they visit California. I spent well over a hundred dollars in sales taxes toward balancing California's budget when I was on vacation there earlier this year. I bet I'm well above average for what the average Californian contributed to our budget. As for your earmark chart, I agree that earmarks are in general not appropriate and we should get rid of them. The fact remains that California has to come up with a workable budget.

14. Everyone has to have a workable budget. Every state, every person.
Which forms of support do you suggest be denied to each?

20. you're making this too philosophical
I am not against welfare for people who need help, but I am against welfare for states who elect Santa Claus politicians that waste their money to try and buy votes. I think the problem is states get a surplus one year and they just have to waste it on social programs/tax cuts/whatever - things that are not sustainable in tough years and then they don't have the political will to cut the programs or raise taxes until it's an emergency.

17. You mean you visited California, drove on state and county roads, were protected by local police, ..
... and enjoyed the benefits of public infrastructure and services there ... for $100?

Wow! :wow: Big spender!

22. Californians
eat beef and other meats, buy corn and wheat products, and support Nebraska's economy in other ways.

Without Californians buying stuff from Nebraska, your state would be in worse shape than it is now.

And the same goes for Nebraskans buying Californian goods.

It's part of being in a national economy.

It's very simple. You DON'T have to come to California at all.

15. If you switch Florida, Colorado, and Nevada to blue,
Texas is the only Republican red state getting less money than they send to Federal government....very interesting. I know my state could sure use the extra money right now. Our Governor issued an executive order cutting spending and that still doesn't fill our budget shortfall.

16. I feel for Michigan
our government policies and our corporations have done so much damage to your state. If we do get state bailouts - which I hope we don't - Michigan should be first in line.

18. Thanks...we sure have been hurting
We're closing in on 8 years of recession...just seems never-ending. I hope Michigan, and all states not getting their fair share of Federal money, get a better deal under an Obama administration.

12. Not a goddamn dime to the anti-union states.
As for California, the Mormon church should bail them out. They apparently don't mind dumping millions in the state for hateful purposes. Take their money by taxing the shit out of them, and use it for something good.

21. As a California resident, we need help here BAD
Prop 13 has killed this state.

The university I got my degree from is about to lose its accreditation, schools are begging, my city is about to lay off police and firefighters... This is going to get grim, fast.

24. I agree - it's Prop 13
I pay 10 times more property taxes than my neighbor - not exactly equal tax representation.

And no, I don't want seniors thrown out of their homes because their property taxes getting raised would kill them, but something has to be done to even the playing field and get money back into the system. There's got to be some kind of adjustment that would help.

I hope Jarvis is burning in hell.
