"Automakers fail to cash in on big GOP donations"
$34 million to Democrats. But the Big Three is snubbed on bailout.
By Ken Bensinger
December 12, 2008

By standing in the way of an auto industry bailout, GOP senators appear to have bitten the hand that fed them.

Over the last decade, General Motors has given $1.50 to Republican candidates for every $1 it has given to Democrats. That same pattern has been followed by Chrysler and Ford, which year after year have favored the right side of the aisle, sometimes by more than a 3-to-1 ratio in dollar terms.

Since 1990, the auto industry as a whole -- including suppliers, dealers and manufacturers -- has cut $100 million in checks to Republicans, compared with just $34 million to Democrats.

On Thursday night, the carmakers discovered just how little loyalty that investment strategy had bought them. MORE...

1. Ever wonder why a Toyota SUV that costs less to produce labor
wise, than a Ford, Dodge or a Chevy, sells for about the same price on a new car lot as the Union made American product?

2. If they somehow survive this, perhaps they will remember
next time. Unlikely, but you never know. Wouldn't hurt to remind them.

Every time a Democrat buys a GM car, they should remark to the dealer "Gee, sure was glad to see you squeak through in that Dec '08 bailout crunch. Remember how the Republicans voted against you guys... wow, sure was glad that the next session of Congress bailed you out and kept you afloat. Not to mention that they finally unstuck the frozen credit situation that Bush and the Republicans had totally snafued. Bet that plus the new plug-in hybrids you are now selling really saved your bacon. Might want to mention it to corporate at the next sales meeting."

3. We need to remind the "Blue Dogs" that...
You can't make deals with scabs and rats and not expect to get the short end of the stick.

4. Well there's a big expense they can cut.
Maybe they should've given it all to the Dems. Then maybe we'd have a majority right now.

I guess the CEOs didn't know until now that their blue collar industry wasn't "cool", huh?

5. The people who cut those checks to the GOP aren't hurting.
They've personally done quite well for their investment.

6. It's always the working guys who "Pay As They Play"
The GOPers have been trying to wipe out organized labor for 130 years. They guys who contribute to the GOP are as Anti-Union as Bob Corker. They want you to owe your soul to the company store.
