Senate Report Says Abuse of Detainees was Fault of White House

In a report from the Senate released on Thursday, the White House, not the soldiers involved in the abuse of detainees in Cuba, Irag, and Afghanistan were stated to be at fault for the occurrences. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Senate Armed Services Committee report acknowledges the techniques used by United States military members to interrogate prisoners, were taken from those used in training programs for special forces personnel.

Tactics allegedly used by the military in connection with the incidents discussed in the report findings include simulated drowning, sleep deprivation, forced nudity, and other methods. As noted by the AP the conclusions were drawn after a two and a half year investigation into policies of the Bush Administration. Only parts of the report that were not classified were released.

As quoted of Committee Chairman Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, “The message from top officials was clear; it was acceptable to use degrading and abusive techniques against detainees.” Senator John McCain was also quoted as commenting, “These policies are wrong and must never be repeated.”

There are other officials who have disputed the claims made in the report.
