Like that is too taboo to even ask about?

Notice two of the biggest NASCAR races are held in states like Alabama and Tennessee where the most vocal Republican opponents to saving the US auto industry are from.

These states rely on the income from these races every year. Its big money for their states economy.

from those southern states.

And anther question not being asked is why do the big banks that are taking our tax money continue to sponser sports and spend millions on "naming rights".

4. I think the vast majority of the money in NASCAR comes from sponsors
other than the automakers themselves. My employer spends tens--maybe hundreds--of millions every year to put their name on sporting events, NASCAR included, and we have very little to do with the car industry.

Motorsports serves a valuable function to car the industry both in marketing and R&D. And if you are going to run a business both of those things--like it or not--are absolute necessities.

Economy affects NASCAR's big night and bottom line

NEW YORK - While the big three auto manufacturers awaited the terms of their bridge loan fate from Congress, NASCAR feted its top 10 drivers at the opulent Waldorf-Astoria in the heart of Gotham.

The pleas to race fans from the sanctioning body and the competitors alike to support the American car companies was a common theme throughout the night's festivities.

When accepting the manufacturer's trophy, Chevrolet GM Ed Peeper described that the current economic situation as "the toughest fight of our lives." Chevrolet teams have already felt the pinch. According to sources, budgets for NASCAR's bowtie brigade were cut by 20 percent across the board. Personal service agreements have also taken a hit from drivers that don't connect with the fan base.

Both Chevrolet and Ford cancelled the annual grand receptions traditionally held on awards night and opted for a more fiscally responsible approach.
