Franken Camp: Coleman Is Desperate, Knows He's Going To Lose
Franken Camp: Coleman Is Desperate, Knows He's Going To Lose
By Eric Kleefeld - December 12, 2008, 5:26PM

In a press briefing just now, a very exuberant Franken campaign put forward a clear message about today's big news that the wrongly-rejected absentee ballots can be counted, which the Coleman campaign is trying to halt by going to court: Norm Coleman is desperate, because he knows he's going to lose.

The shift in tone from the Franken camp, compared to their more defensive posture in previous calls, reflects just how suddenly the dynamics of the race have shifted in his favor today.

Franken's lead recount lawyer Marc Elias said to not believe the Coleman camp's spin that they're not trying to stop the vote count. "But just read the papers that they file when they file them, and don't look past what they file," he said. "They are seeking an injunction, they are seeking to stop counties from counting lawful ballots."

2. Well he may have no connection to the laterns, but his wife did invent the Blo and Go
You can't make this stuff up...

From a Senate Wife, an Off-the-Wall Hair Idea

By Robin Givhan
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, January 16, 2008; C01

Laurie Coleman, wife of Republican Sen. Norm Coleman, has invented a tool for hands-free hair drying called the "Blo & Go."

snip

In 2004, Coleman was pictured in this newspaper wearing a corset and garter -- and posing poutily in front of a four-poster bed -- all in the name of promoting her acting career. Coleman no longer is acting, she says, but "if something fun would come up, I'd pursue it."

Against the backdrop of this kind of marketing savvy, it is hard to believe that the name Blo & Go was not chosen to, at the very least, amuse. This, after all, is a world in which the term "wide stance" churns up easy chuckles.

Coleman's voice registers shock -- and dismay-- that anyone would make such a connection. "I didn't think of that," she says. And then she goes further to point out that the name wasn't even her idea. It came out of a committee. It was all in the brainstorming, during which "Freedom Styler" was rejected. And so it went: You get your hair blown out. You need a blowout. You get blown . . . out. And then you go. Bingo: "Blo & Go!"

5. Too bad Nader decided to concentrate his efforts on the swing states in 2004,

garnering 95,000 votes in Florida alone -- claiming that Bush and Gore were "Tweedledee and Tweedledum."

If less than one percent of Nader voters had voted for Gore, Gore wouldn't have had to fight at all.

6. He was not on the ballot then
I think he was focused on taking back Wellstone's seat and he'll do whatever's necessary to do it.. Back in '04 he may have "seen the handwriting" on the wall, and decided to not jinx his own planned run in '08..He could not afford to be tagged as a "BlackBoxLoonie".. WE know there are problems, but the main stream media has NOT embraced this issue except to paint US as "loonies"..:grr:

12. But we've come a loooooong way.
Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 09:53 PM by bleever

Every TV network had their own hotline this election for people to report voting problems.

And I was disappointed that Al wouldn't look down the electoral fraud tunnel in 2004, but you're right about not wanting to politically brand himself with the loonie tag.

Now that he's been converted through this baptism by fire, I have high hopes that he'll be one of the most receptive senators on election fraud issues.

Take heart!

11. State Canvassing Board has announced a schedule
Per diary at dKos

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/12/12/12128/450/967/672289

They will convene on Tuesday, the 16th, to review the challenged ballots. They hope to finish the review by the 19th, and certify the total on that date. In the meeting that seemed to be a firm commitment -- however, in a post-meeting press conference, Sec. Ritchie indicated he thought the Board could manage to review about 1,000 serious (non-frivolous) challenges in those four days. If they are forced to review more challenges, Ritchie indicated the Board would take the time to do it, Ritchie, however, again insisted the campaigns withdraw frivolous challenges, so as to speed up the process.

The only possible wrench in this process? If the County Boards resist this recommendation. Without a doubt, that would send the Franken campaign to court. Any litigation on that end might prove problematic, as Sec. Ritchie insists he would "expect to be done by the evening of the 19th."

If the Board is determined to certify the vote at that time, it might create a Bush v. Gore dilemma for the courts, where the deadline might drive the decision of the courts, even if it meant ordering that legal votes not be counted. With that prospect in mind, one would hope that the County boards will decide on their own to review the rejected ballots, and make fair determinations that will allow counting of all wrongly rejected ballots.

Can the Board get this done by the 19th? Ritchie says "We will put the emphasis on accuracy and transparency, but we are mindful of time." If the review of challenged ballots isn't done on the 19th, the Board will continue until it's work is done. Ritchie said that the Franken camp is about to withdraw over 700 challenges. That would get the total of challenged ballots down to 3500. That is still too many ballots to review in the 4 days set aside. There is the additional complication that there may be challenges with respect to any absentee ballots that might be counted for the first time, during the week ahead. No one on the State Board seemed to realize that this is a serious prospect, and there was no discussion of that potential complication.

Still, if everything goes smoothly -- one week from tonight, we might be celebrating the election of Al Franken to the United States Senate. If anyone doesn't think that matters, I would direct them to consider the vote in the Senate last night on the Big 3 auto bailout. Each vote in the Senate will matter in the years ahead.

13. Why the need for a deadline?...
why not just make sure all the votes are counted, no matter how long it takes?

Sheesh.
