New York immigrant dead in apparent hate crime

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A 31-year-old Ecuadorian man who was beaten last Sunday in what New York City authorities say may have been a hate crime has died at a Queens hospital, his brother said Saturday.

Jose Sucuzhanay and his brother, Romel, had left a party on December 7 at St. Brigid's Roman Catholic Church when several men approached them in a car in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, police said. The men allegedly began shouting anti-gay and anti-Latino vulgarities at the two men.

Jose suffered severe head trauma and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital. He died Friday night from his injuries.

Romel, 38, escaped with minor scrapes and has talked with detectives on the case.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said she was "horrified to learn that anti-LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual) and anti-Latino slurs were used by one or more of the assailants, raising this event to the level of a hate crime."

3. From what I understand, he's not gay. His attackers assumed he was because he had his arm around his
brother.

5. Christ on a crutch
I've always wondered why more gays don't carry guns. Beating up gays seems to be a favorite hobby of troglodytes.

6. He wasn't gay.
He might have been mistaken for a gay because he was walking with his brother.

11. This is an important distinction
It shows that gay bashing is a threat to everyone, not just those who are gay. It ought to cause everyone to sit up and take notice and push for stronger laws and/or greater enforcement of existing laws.

7. Just a semantic quibble, but your headline is a little misleading.....
It says "Gay Latino beaten to death" when it seems that a Latino who was assumed to be gay by his attackers was beaten to death.

10. The pattern continues
A cop was charge for allegedly sticking a nightstick on a gay (really gay) man in the city.
DNA has been found in the stick: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2008/12/09/2008-12-09_three_nypd_cops_charged_in_subway_assaul.html
