Poll question: Do you think BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Nissan, and other non North American headquartered auto companies
should be allowed to advertise on North American television?

6. There are extremists in all categories of society
But I don't think the majority of people wold oppose foreign competition, even most of the union members here. The problem with foreign automakers are they get all this help from their governments, and add to that giveaways from state governments to woo them to to their region that our automakers don't get (and if they do get giveaways, they aren't close to comparable numerically speaking).

5. The foreign auto companies have sided with the Big 3
they can't afford to have them fail.

Big 3 rescue wins rivals' support
Foreign-based carmakers fear backlash collapse of Detroit's auto industry would have on supply chain.
Christine Tierney / The Detroit News

WASHINGTON -- They may be unrelenting rivals of Detroit's Big Three, but foreign-based automakers don't relish the prospect that one or more of Detroit's automakers might go under.

On the contrary, the risk that one of the U.S. car companies could collapse deeply worries Asian and German manufacturers with U.S. factories.

As the industry's outlook has deteriorated in recent months, executives at foreign car companies have said they want to see Detroit's cash-strapped automakers get through the crisis, noting that they all share the same network of suppliers.

"We're joined at the hip with our Detroit brethren in manufacturing," said Irv Miller, group vice president and chief spokesman at Toyota Motor Corp.'s U.S. sales subsidiary. Whatever the U.S. government proposes to keep the U.S. automakers afloat, "we support it," Miller said.

That hasn't stopped people around here from shitting on them constantly. You know, all those "Jap" and "Rice" companies. (But I'm not a racist! Reeeeeeally!) Fucking disgusting things being written here about non-Americans.

And damn those foreign corps for using US workers to build their autos on US soil an not ship them in from overseas. How dare they. :sarcasm:

I'm sickened by the smears against other nationalities.

Or those cars from Bratwurst Motor Works?

Or the Aquavit fueled Volvos that are upon our streets?

But it still doesn't answer my question. Why no fun ethnic insults for European imports?

31. Because rich people buy European imports and poor people buy Asian imports, or so the story goes.
It's clear as day. Nobody accuses an Audi driver of being a Nazi, but you'll hear all kinds of shit hurled at drivers of Asian cars.

14. I don't want my job "given" to anyone, American or not. What does a "foreigner" have to do with it?
If everyone but me made a million dollars a year, I would be in a great position to renegotiate with my boss, because she couldn't hire a competent replacement for less than that. IF, on the other hand, everyone else made $100 a year, I would have a hard time holding on to my job and salary.

I could try to get a law passed that I was entitled to my keep job and salary (let those poor folks pull themselves up by their own bootstraps). If I were successful at that, I could enjoy my lifestyle in the hopes that the police, army and ICE officers will protect me from all those $100 a year folks. Or I could figure out that we are all (not just Daytonians, not just Ohioans, not just MidWesterners, not just Americans, not just the West) in this together. If we don't solve the problem of global poverty, just walling off the world's poor and their products and services isn't going to make me safe or content. (The same applies to American poverty. If we don't solve it, we can't just wall off those poor folks and expect to go about our business indefinitely.)

19. If no foreign goods were advertised on TV
Edited on Mon Dec-15-08 10:12 AM by gollygee
We wouldn't have any free-to-air TV channels anymore because there would be so little ad revenue.

Should TV stations even be able to show foreign TV shows or movies?

This poll is really really really stupid.

23. Aren't the ads run predominantly by the area dealers?
I was under the impression that that was the case, in which case that would just punish another segment of American worker/business.

24. I'm not so sure that is the case with "imports"
they generally have a much more thinly spread network of dealerships which means that to maintain a similar on air presence as the domestics it would be necessary for corporate to kick in.

I admit, when I was summing up my post, I was thinking of the area Ford and GM dealerships, and one BIG Porsche/Audi/VW dealer.
