21. I'm spiritual but not religious

I usually think of religious belonging to :
• of or relating to the worship of or a "doctrine" concerning a divine being or beings

• belonging or relating to a monastic order or other group of people who are united by their practice of religion

The Buddha you meet is not the true Buddha but an expression of your longing. You may need the boat to get across the river. But once you're across, you don't carry the boat with you. You leave it behind.

10. Actually many members of the DU community are Atheist
You shouldn't slander them like that. Atheists should have access to the same opportunities as any American of faith, and sadly they don't. It's very very difficult to run for office as an Atheist for example, which is a shame.

8. Yeah, I am...
Although fundynuts would say I'm not. I don't listen to them though. Also, I don't care one whit whether other people are religious or not.

Something fundies can't get their heads wrapped around.

15. Yes, and I'll explain why.
Religion is a set of rules. Religion dictates that if one follows its rules then one can obtain eternal life. Religion is dogmatic by nature and authoritarian. One the other hand, faith, at least as it relates to Christianity, is the acknowledgment that humans cannot adhere to strict rules and dogma so we can only be saved by faith alone.

So for me, it is possible to have faith and absolutely no religion. Everyone else is free to believe whatever they want, it's really not my business.

16. Ah - well i certainly agree that it is possible to have faith and no religion
Particularly as you define religion. I guess my problem would be with the flip side; that it's impossible to have a religion and faith at the same time. But I may have misunderstood what you were saying.

22. I guess for me to say
they are mutually exclusive is, in fact, a logical fallacy. I hate it when I do that :).

13. I have faith but I have no religion
I do not believe in a god out there somewhere but I do have faith in me in the here and now. I'm one of those persons who can remember back to when I was a little baby and some of my earliest thoughts were that I've been here before and I'll be here again. Who knows though

23. The word "religious" has several meanings.
It can refer to people who have an obsession with religion.
In that sense of the word, many atheists are extremely religious.
They are religious fanatics.
Obsessed. Totally.

And they probably voted "no" in this poll.
