Poll question: Alternative to a bigot delivering a prayer at a state function.
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 08:09 PM by ColbertWatcher
Please note: this poll is to figure out an alternative to saying prayers at state functions and not to pick a religious person who isn't bigoted to replace Rick Warren, who as everyone knows hates science and law as much as he hates women and gay people

Instead of having a hateful Dominionist deliver a prayer at a state function (yeah I know, saying both hateful and Dominionist is redundant), why can't Obama have an historian or teacher deliver a speech about the Constitution?

I believe the Constitution is not an antiquated document (like the Federalist Society followers believe) but alive and the real ideal for Americans.

I believe we need to consider it more in our every day lives and bring it back to the forefront of American politics instead of mindlessly re-enacting old traditions.

From the selections below, choose a better and secular alternative to Rick Warren:

A. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_Chemerinsky">Erwin Chemerinsky

B. Howard Zinn

C. Dan Farber, author of http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Retained-by-the-People/Daniel-Farber/e/9780465022984/?itm=10">"Retained by the People: The 'Silent' Ninth Amendment and the Constitutional Rights Americans Don't Know They Have"

D. Sandra Day O'Conner

E. Another teacher or historian (If I can think of one, I will post his/her name in reply)

F. no one should speak, have a moment of silence instead

G. Continue the tradition of saying prayers at state functions and continue the tradition started by the Dubya Administration of ignoring the Constitution

6. How about a moment of silence?
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 07:42 PM by liberalmuse
When I was a teenager, and a Mormon, I prayed inside myself, so no one would ever know, everywhere I went. What is wrong with that? On that note, I am going to have to nominate the dreaded 'Moment of Silence' for this one. The silence being filled with Muslim, Christian, Wiccan, and even Atheist 'prayers'.

Probably someone from UN/NGA groups .. or native American ---

Cindy Sheehan in an anti-war statement would do it for me ---!!!

Del Martin's name was familiar, however, though that's all --

PBS did some interesting programming on the early lesbian movements -- long while

ago -- and doubt we'll be seeing much more. They were hiding the sensational

"In The Life" programming for years and it may now be gone--???

As a straight, I've always thought it was its best program-- for anyone-!!!

Two sensational people Lyon & Martin -- but we won't see their calibre of

intelligence and courage at this Inauguration.

Personally ... I think entire event is basically about money ....

I noticed LABOR -- tho last remembered -- seems to have made out OK among

the other disaster appointments ... and with all the support from the

homosexual community, I'm shocked at anyone's even suggesting Warren.

If homosexuals gave individually, I think they should forego that in future

and contribute only thru an organization capable of putting leverage on

administration. The public gave a lot of money individually to Obama, but

no leverage on him. I don't know if giving thru DU works any better as identity

of website seems to lean more towards DLC right now.

24. LOL! I agree!
In fact, we've been working on getting an online vote started, so people can vote "Stephen" to be included at the inaugural.

His qualifications are:

1. he's American
2. he's got balls
3. he teaches Sunday school
4. it will give his children a chance to see him on stage

Dr. Colbert has stated before that he won't let his children watch his show, because he plays a character that contradicts what he really believes. He feels what he says in character would seem as though he is lying and he doesn't want his kids to see him lying.

Allowing him to deliver the invocation will benefit the world as much as it will America and the Colbert children.

34. I don't have a problem with a prayer, but by someone else would be great
I do believe the constitution is an antiquated document, but not for any of the reasons that the federalist society probably would. I'm of the "living document" persuasion.

Any document that wrote that black slaves should be counted as three fifths of a whole person is antiquated, in my opinion. :)
