Indian Nuclear Command Authority Discusses All Available Options; PM Meets At War Table

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh chaired a meeting of India’s Nuclear Command Authority (NCA) to discuss all the options available to India on Thursday.

Top Indian political leaders including External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister AK Antony and Home Minister P Chidambaram attended the four-hour meeting in the South Block headquarters of the Indian Defence Ministry, to make what Indian newspapers called “decisions on further consolidation of India’s nuclear deterrence”.

Defence sources here have said the Indian government was monitoring the situation amid reports by Indian intelligence agencies of a movement of troops in Pakistan. Indian Air Force jets were in a state of ‘operational readiness’ and an unusual movement of planes had been reported along the border areas, they said.

The last time an Indian prime minister had held a meeting in the South Block was at the beginning of the Parakram Operation and before that during the Kargil War.

2. Ditto. Not what I wanted to read about the day after Christmas. I'm about
ready to put my head into the sand and quit reading and worrying about could happen in this crazy world. I want to concentrate instead on what I can do to bring some good to my immediate community and family. My guess is that the last eight years have been so intense that I just feel drained.

11. Way too close to us... Pakistan and India nuke each other
and we are in for fall-out.

Apart from that the majority of the population HERE is either Indian, or Pakistani... The tensions will not be nice... :(

3. Pakistan Deploys 20,000 Troops to India Border
The announcement by Pakistani officials that the army had cancelled all leave and redeployed troops was quickly followed by the Indian government warning its citizens against all travel to its northern neighbour.

Tension between the two countries has risen dramatically since the terrorist attacks in Mumbai a month ago, which left more than 170 people dead. India has accused Pakistan of allowing the Lahore-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) to operate unchecked and accused LeT of masterminding and launching the attack.

The nuclear-armed rivals have fought three wars in the last 60 years, with as many as an estimated million soldiers massing on the border as they have headed towards - and then pulled back from - war in recent years, with the disputed territory of Kashmir at the heart of their differences.

The rhetoric from both sides has intensified in the last week, provoking the latest bellisose move by Pakistan.

5. It is a good question. Of course, if and when they do go into Pakistan
by air, ground or sea they will claim it is their right. They will cite the camps of LeT and others as responsible for the Mumbai attack, and the Pakistani ISI, military and government by extension.

10. Indians Warned to Avoid Pakistan
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=4719876&mesg_id=4719876

India is telling its people to stay out of Pakistan. The reason given that Indians are being blamed for terrorist acts within Pakistan. Of course, a country would also tell its people to avoid a country that they is going to be attacked by that country....

13. Sharif may lay low, let Pakistan fall apart and try to sweep in to
reclaim power. I saw that thread you put up mentioning dinner with/near him. That must have been something. And, I would have had the same reaction, get out before an attempt on him came.

of course our pakistani friend who was eating with us had a different take... If I can quote him, his response was 'screw the douchebag'...
