The Founding of the Church of Gay
via AlterNet's PEEK:

The Founding of the Church of Gay

Posted by AndyS in Colorado, Daily Kos at 5:00 PM on December 25, 2008.

Your taxpayer dollars will be used to fund our work overturning all laws contrary to our religious precepts.

This will be a church and a religion with the following precepts (and ONLY the following precepts):

* "Sexual orientation is OK" -- to the Church of Gay, being gay (or straight, or bi, or just not interested, for that matter) is ok, and any disagreement with the above precept is sacrilege and heresy.

* The individual choice of marriage between any two consenting non-related adults is Holy. Those partaking of the Act are, by definition, Holy in the eyes of the Church of Gay.

* Discrimination or treating societally differently any person on the grounds of sexual orientation in any manner is an abomination.

* The existence or non-existence of a creator is beyond the bounds of Church of Gay philosophy.
First, we can demand immediate tax exempt status for all activities of the Church of Gay as any other Church.

And, any funds disbursed for public referenda on gay rights would be tax exempt to the extent that such similar activities of the Mormon, Catholic, or any other Churches, would also be tax exempt for the Church of Gay.

That's right -- your taxpayer funds will be used to fund our activities in overturning all laws contrary to our religious precepts. That's the way it is, and too bad for you. We will of course abide by non-endorsement-of-candidate IRS guidelines. The fact that in many cases this doesn't matter very much if we still bad-mouth candidates who believe in things contrary to our position is, again, too bad for you. ........(more)

1. I would join.
I left the Catholic church a few decades ago, mostly because of their hateful attitude towards women. I investigated several other religions, and found that most (with the exception of UU/UUP) had some type of discrimination woven into their core values.

Sounds like COG would suit me fine.

4. Too bad this is just a blog entry. Someone should do this for real
There are so many not-for-profit churches out there with many of them being bogus political machines.

A church based on no bigotry should be a shoo-in to get a license.

5. I much prefer the German way of doing things
Marriage is a church matter. If you belong to a church that does marriages, whatever 'marriage' means to that church, then you can get married. If you want tax status, next-of-kin, etc. then you get a civil union. That's the law for everybody, gay or straight, religious or not. As a straight atheist, this arrangement seems to me to be the model of common sense.

6. I like that a lot.
But I guess "marriage" is too tied in with the civil aspect of it here; at least that's what I gather from the number of people who are saying that "civil union" is second-class status in this country.

7. Yeah. Civil Union loses 2nd class status if everyone has to have it.
If people are so hung up on the religious meanings of marriage, then I say remove marriage entirely into the religious sphere and let the purely earthly concerns be separated out into the legal sphere. And since all religions have to be held equally valid under the law (something we absolutely can't give ground on) then if there were a Church of Gay, then marriages conducted by that church would be just as valid as those conducted by any other religious institution.

8. I dunno. The government told the Mormons they couldn't keep polygamy.
Please don't yell at me, anybody! I want gay marriage, or civil unions for everybody, or anything that treats everybody the same as much as anybody. Just pointing out that government *has* told churches what they could and couldn't do upon occasion.
