eye witness to the crime scene in Tenn.

The Scene at Swan Pond Road
The Great Coal Ash Flood

-snip-

As the clock neared 12pm we prepared to see the sight that no other on-the-ground media source had captured since the spill took place 3 days earlier. Most of the media coverage had occurred from the air. The images and angles that we had been seeking since being on the ground on day 1 had finally become a reality for us. This was a reality that the local residents had been living with for nearly 1/2 a week.

Some residents told us TVA had been dealing with leaks in the ash pond walls in 2004, 2006, and a month and half ago in 2008. We were not prepared for the devastation into which we drove. The enormity of the destruction was almost too much for us to handle. We set up the tripod and took the panoramic shots with a slow horizontal pan from left to right. As TVA workers replaced the power lines and local police patrolled to help maintain order in the disaster zone we video taped the legacy that TVA left for the Kingston/ Harriman area of Tennessee.

-snip-

We gathered more than 24 water samples. We distributed at least 75 packets of info to coal impacted and local residents.

Today we continued to learn that many of the local residents who were or could be considered "impacted" were not given any type of aid including hotels, fresh water, information, a knock on the door informing them what the heck that big crash was or what had happened. We also learned that the peninsula had become more of a prison camp for impacted residents rather than their home. Granted this is understandable and many residents were starting to complain about the number of cars traveling along their narrow road.

There were serious complaints about the overuse of police force in questioning and turning away family or visiting friends during the holidays. After some citizen complaints to elected officials the local police force decided they could no longer staff a blockade but they increased the patrols throughout the day.

-snip-

Yesterday we spoke with one man who had been vomiting for 12 hours after drinking a few pots of coffee made from the tainted water. We informed to go to the hospital and we could not find him again today. Today we met a lady whose dogs had been vomiting after drinking the un-boiled tainted water. This lady had been boiling water all day with one small electric eye in order to water her herd of dogs, have drinking water for her family, and cook the Christmas dinner. She was very happy to receive the multiple gallons of water. We grabbed samples of her tap water. Upon observation we saw large particles floating in the water.

The people working to put in a new water line for these residents had run into complications due to bedrock and had pushed back the scheduled completion of the waterline until Friday January 3, 2009. TVA was informing these residents to boil their water for the next 5 days. If TVA thinks residents need to boil the water first then it must not be safe. Why is it not safe? What are the problems? We need to know!

-snip-

As we drove back to Knoxville in the rain we began to plan how TVA's criminal actions would impact our lives over the next few days, weeks, months and years. United Mountain Defense is in a unique situation at this time. This is the work that we have been training for for the past 5 years. This is the time to act. This is the major mistake that the coal industry and TVA does not want the world to know about. We can change the future. Join us please.

yellow crime scene tape should be placed around the entire area.

HAZMAT teams should be on the ground.

Tenn. has been toxic for ages and now add this disaster - another state down the drain.

29. Yep. It actually concentrates it.
Unless you are distilling the water, there may be filters that can deal with heavy metals.

I'm not sure if mercury would be left behind by distillation or not. What's the boiling point of mercury?

6. Here's some necessary background info for people unfamiliar with what the above is all about:

The Tennessee Valley Authority, better known as TVA, has a coal-burning power plant located near Harriman, Tennessee, along Interstate 40 between Knoxville and Nashville. On Monday, December 22 around 1:00 a.m. residences living near the Kingston coal plant were flooded with approximately 500 million gallons of nasty black coal waste. It covered 400 acres of land up to 6 feet and flooded into tributaries of the Tennessee River - the water supply for Chattanooga TN and millions of people living downstream in Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky.

The coal ash, slurry or sludge is a byproduct left over after TVA burns their coal and they have a huge mountain of this coal waste material stored in a gigantic pile next to their Kingston power plant, alongside the tributary of the Tennessee River. Coal ash contains mercury and dangerous heavy metals like lead and arsenic, among many other potentially toxic and radioactive contaminates. Materials found naturally in coal are concentrated in the ash and more toxic than they start.

This Tennessee TVA spill is over 40 times bigger than the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska. This is a huge environmental disaster of epic proportions.
United Mountain Defense has been at the site of the spill sharing information about the extremely serious threats to human health and the environment. We have been going door to door passing out information about the chemicals that may be present in impacted drinking water. TVA is advising families to boil water however they are not informing anyone about the reasons for needing to boil the water or sharing any chemicals that may be present in their water...

We had very heavy rain in the days before this. It wasn't planned. It's the lack of planning that is the problem.

14. Yes, I'm reading the Knox News right now and it isn't even a headline. TVA claims
water is safe. I knew little about this until I read this post here on DU.

http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/dec/27/spillage-amount-tripled/

TVA spokesman John Moulton said Friday evening that TVA tests show elevated levels of lead and thallium in water near the breach but that tests elsewhere are within regulatory limits.

"Right there at that point is the only pllace we've had elevated levels," Moulton said, adding that both chemicals should be removed by water treatment systems.

Mercury and arsenic have been found in "barely detectable" levels, Moulton said.

The plant is located at the confluence of the Emory and Clinch rivers. The Kingston water treatment plant is downstream at a peninsula formed by the Clinch and Tennessee rivers. The treatment plant draws water from the Tennessee River, but it's close enough to the confluence with the Clinch that water can eddy upstream and flow into the intakes.

"All samples received to date indicate that the water entering the Kingston Water Treatment Plant meets public health standards," said Tisha Calabrese-Benton, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

Granted, the Sentinel has gone downhill over the past eight years, but the recent layoffs they've had probably also are contributing to their inability to write a decent story.

43. Oh, I think our stories have been more than decent.
Remember, we have to try to get both sides. In the story we ran today, though, it was apparent that the shock is wearing off and the residents are getting angry. They are concerned about their health and say their questions are not being answered. If an official makes a statement about something such as the safety of the water, we're duty-bound to report it accurately. The residents and the readers must make up their own minds about such a statement and, if they disagree with it, push for more information. As the story develops, we will be following it, but we cannot dictate its direction.

A public meeting took place today, and so many people showed up at the original site, the fire marshal made them move to a larger venue.

15. Why isn't TVA supplying the residents with Fresh & Clean Drinking Water?.?.?
This problem seems to have originated because of TVA's lack of EPA standards.

Maybe TVA hopes these people die off, therefore there will less people to supply power to their houses.

Thank you, United Mountain Defense for trying to do the job TVA should be required to do by law. At least there are concerned people like UMD who care about THE PEOPLE who are held prisoners by TVA's negligence.
