1. Other: agave nectar
Whole Foods carries it and it has a low glycemic index.

22. Agave Nectar is by far the best sweetner.
I love to make a big pot of coffee turn it off and let it cool then drink it iced with agave nectar, since agave nectar is already a liquid it works perfect as a sweetener for cold drinks.

15. Stevia
Unless I need a sweetener in cooking or baking. Then I either go with brown or regular sugar, honey, molasses, etc. sometimes mixed with stevia.

18. Maple syrup. Grade B dark for my coffee
Medium Amber for oatmeal. Grade A for pancakes and french toast. I go through a lot of maple syrup. It's virtually the only sweetener I use.

27. do you know of anyplace to buy it in bulk?

the price in the stores has pretty much doubled over the past year- i use a lot of it as well, and i'm wondering if there's anyplace in vermont or canada(none of that new hampshire swill) that sells it by the barrel, or at least a 5-gallon bucketful. i've searched the inter-tubes a few times, but to no avail.

31. I like Splenda the best
because it leaves little aftertaste in my tea. I just have to watch my intake because too much of a good thing gives me the runs.

I need sugar or honey for baking because of the chemistry of baking.

I dislike the taste of Stevia and Aspartame breaks down in hot liquids and leaves a chemical aftertaste in cold ones.

The rest of you are perfectly free to use what works for you.

but I went back to sugar recently because it is a natural food and not chemically altered, plus sugar is cheaper.

Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 06:51 PM by Sebastian Doyle
In other words, yes to the maple syrup, agave, honey, and regular old sugar if the others aren't available. Stevia when the "sugarless" option is needed.

Never high fructose corn poison or aspartame. Fuck Monsanto with Tom Vilsack's dick.

Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 07:58 PM by pitohui
i like them all but you need different sugars for different circumstance, a high quality honey or a maple syrup can be excellent, and sometimes nothing dissolves better than a little white cane sugar

for health purposes, i guess i like saccharine the best, you need only a trace amount, but to many people it tastes bitter -- to me aspartame is sickeningly sweet and i've occasionally had a bad reaction to splenda, which i otherwise like (not to sickly sweet)

so many choices...

to me stevia tastes like a weed, i'm surprised it gets many votes, agave nectar can be good but not as tasty as a good honey IMHO
