George W Bush's $300m library in danger of becoming white elephant
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 05:23 PM by douglas9
As President George W Bush eyes his legacy, his presidential library at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, threatens to be a white elephant.

Bush has bought a $3m (£2.05m) house in a Republican enclave 10 minutes away from his proposed library and hopes to play an active role in the policy institute that will be established there. With his approval ratings at a record low of 20%, according to a CBS poll, he is keenly interested in shaping the verdict of history.

Id like to be . . . known as somebody who liberated 50m people and helped achieve peace,” Bush said in a recent interview. Laura Bush said last week that she saw the policy institute as a “great vehicle” for continuing her support for women’s rights in Afghanistan and the Middle East.

Work on the $300m library will begin in January, overseen by the architect Robert Stern, dean of the Yale school of architecture. The identity of donors has been kept secret from Bush, who established a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy about their names after The Sunday Times revealed in July that a top Republican donor was touting access to senior administration officials in return for donations of up to $250,000.

1. Well... with about 200 million of it either
censored, redacted or blacked out I can see how this could be an issue.

What a waste of money and time.

3. How much do they think a copy of My Pet Goat costs?
Bibles are free, so I know they don't expect the other $299,999,975 to be used there. What gives?

4. SMU should rethink its policy on Chimps presidential libarry and ban them out of the campus.
Send the libarry to Iraq. I'm sure they'll be throwing flowers and spreading word of love, peace, and freedom to the libarry.

10. The Southwestern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church has one more chance
to kick out the 'policy institute' There will be a type of judicial hearing sometime this winter, I believe it will be in Februrary, in which a ruling will be issued. I hope those Bishops boot it.

6. The ultimate slap in the face for America and the world would be for this smarmy creep
to rewrite history and evade even that judgment after already evading judgment of an impeachment.

This is the story of George W. Bush's life. A hopeless, no-account, screw-up who was so because he never had to answer for a single one of his myriad and continuing failures.

8. You hit the ol' nail on the head.
When you can walk away from your failures unscathed, they aren't failures in your mind. Merely inconveniences.

Not only are his parents to blame, but his father's friends who bailed him out of trouble, time after time.

He was probably a good cheerleader, when he could still stand up.

7. Great quote from the article...
“I thought Bush would have to go a long way to beat Richard Nixon and Herbert Hoover but, at the last minute, he pushed the ball across the line and brought on the new Great Depression.”

        - Bruce Bartlett, former Republican treasury official

18. That'll last about two days...
Georgie will be boozing and playing golf every day after he leaves the WH, with occasional trips to Kennebunkport to do same + boating. I doubt he really cares much about his so-called legacy.
