Gonzo: I'm A Casualty Of The War On Terror
By Zachary Roth - December 31, 2008, 9:34AM
Looks like Gonzo still doesn't quite get it.

Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales -- under whose tenure the Justice Department often appeared to take its orders from the White House political office -- sat down with the Wall Street Journal in an effort to clear his name. But we're guessing he did himself more harm than good.

Gonzo appeared genuinely unable to grapple with why he might be unpopular. "What is it that I did that is so fundamentally wrong, that deserves this kind of response to my service?" he asked.

And he wasn't above wallowing in self-pity, making a comparison that would likely rankle families of 9/11 and Iraq war victims: "For some reason, I am portrayed as the one who is evil in formulating policies that people disagree with. I consider myself a casualty, one of the many casualties of the war on terror."

...................

And Gonzo put the blame for the memos authorizing torture squarely on John Yoo, the then-DOJ lawyer who wrote them -- even though even though there's no evidence that Gonzo, as White House counsel, raised any objection.

4. He's probably simply not intelligent enough to understand what he did wrong.
That's been my impression of him since he was Bush's lacky attorney in Texas, where he once argued that Bush shouldn't have to serve on jury duty because he might one day be called upon to pardon the suspect as governor. (The real reason was because Bush didn't want to answer questions under oath about past legal problems like DUIs).

He's a lightweight who never understood the responsibilities of his job. He thought his role was to do what Bush said, and use any means necessary to do it, and had no integrity to give him focus, so that he could advise Bush on legal issues as he was hired to do. His interview pretty much confirms that.

I'd like to believe these people, from Bush on down, would have to face what they did in a legal court, but I'm not naive enough. I can still hope, though.

8. Cluelessness is what got him his jobs
The BUSH family are great at recruiting Useful Tools, at playing sleight of hand distraction tricks like posting minority sell-outs as nominees to use their race/ethnicity against the Dems.

We *know* that YOO and others wrote the memos, AND we also know that Gonzo was put in as the figurehead to SIGN them. But I didn't know that Gonzo was THIS clueless!1

13. He can cry me a river and jump into it and drown
He's one of the architects of the abrogation of the Geneva Conventions. His hands are just as bloody as Cheney's, Addington's, Yoo's.

He belongs in prison with the lot of them.

Victim, my ass. Victims have maimed bodies and shattered minds. He's just the same evil piece of filth he always was.
