SC Unemployment Fund Could Go Broke Without Deal
(12-31) 06:22 PST Columbia, S.C. (AP) --

A standoff between South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and the state's unemployment agency is endangering benefits to thousands of people.

The state's unemployment fund will run dry by the end of the day unless the state accesses a $146 million federal loan to keep benefits flowing through March.

But the Republican governor has said he won't sign a request for the loan until the state agency that calculates unemployment figures agrees in writing to several demands, including an audit by a state watchdog.

The state's trust fund has been losing money for years as annual payments have exceeded the amount businesses pay in unemployment insurance taxes.

1. He signed the request.
SC jobless checks to continue as gov ends impasse.
Jobless South Carolina residents will continue to receive unemployment benefits.

Gov. Mark Sanford on Wednesday announced he will request a federal loan of $146 million to pay the benefits though March. Without the request, the fund tapped for weekly payments of $14 million to some 77,000 residents would have run dry by the end of the day.

2. South Carolina is a dinosaur with their barnacles around the federal government
All aid should be stopped and they should restructure, with worker concessions- because they are the problem.
