Should the history channel change its name?
Seriouslly, they're showing M*A*S*H and "A perfect Storm."

I love MASH and I know a perfect storm is based on real events, but I hardly think these kind of things belong on a station dedicated to history.

1. We call it the Hitler channel...
It used to be wonderful..as was The Learning Channel..

Now TLC is mostly UK make-overs & infomercials.. not much "learning" these days..

7. Or A&E, which bleeps all swear words and such
Since when does art have good language requirements?

All A&E is now is true crime crap anyway. My friend always says it's where you get your fix of murder.

8. I just wish it showed Hitler instead of Bigfoot, Alaskan trucks and bridge building.
Plus, the History Channel is unaware of the Civil War.

It's really amazing, given the extraordinary amount of material they have, that they are such an incredibly junk-filled network.

Do like "The Universe" series, though. Even if it's not strictly history. Mostly, though, the station sucks.

9. They just keep piecing together old footage
their parent company owns, and then calling it "new"..

Once the networks & big entertainment companies started buying up all the specialty channles, I knew the handwriting was on the wall..and it's only gotten worse..

14. History International is a little bit better
but both of them slip in a lot of Christian propaganda around holidays, promoting myths that have been debunked again and again. Oh, and the Nostradamus stuff chaps my butt. Every new bunch of suckers think they know what he was describing and every new bunch of suckers is wrong.

I wish they'd buy the rights to some of Ken Burns's stuff. It would be a welcome relief.

26. and UFOs and Nostradamus and monsters and......
I usually check to see if they ever have anything worth watching. Only on rare occassions anymore.
This is what the right wing told us would replace PBS.

10. We just got cable a couple weeks ago and I noticed right away how much
the History Channel and A&E have changed since I last had cable--15 years ago?. Very disappointing. I was looking forward to having those channels available again. :(

18. The dumbing down is because people are getting dumber and these channels cater
to what they think people want to see (and ratings must bear this out).

13. And the Travel Channel should be the Poker Channel
The other day, they were doing a two-part documentary on Russian history - it was four hours long and I couldn't watch it all then. Did they repeat it? No! They did some other non-historical garbage for the next eight hours.

I remember when they started - they had the same tired old troupe of actors playing Romans, Goths, early Brits - just changed their costume and had them march to war across (the same) field, then raise their spears and charge.

In the last five years, they've really gone downhill, though. Their history has taken on a bit of a right-wing flavor, if you ask me.

because of all the shows on UFO's and other strange things like Bigfoot.

20. How about the Bullshit Propaganda channel?
When it comes to things like the assassinations of the 1960s or the 9-11 attacks, that channel is anything BUT an accurate historical record.

And all the shows on Nostradamus or the Antichrist or whatever? Can prophecy (i.e. predicting the future) actually be called history?

22. lately it has been the Bible Channel
It seems like every time I turn it on I get UFOs as noted above, or some religious/biblical show. They can be kind of interesting, but not ALL the time.

23. As with most channels of this type, a few shows really shine, and the rest suck...
The Universe is a good show, I also saw one on Evolution that actually captured the interest of my 4 year old nephew, I think he even understood some of it. Its true of all the other educational channels, most of it is crap, but there are some really good shows that shine through the crap, the key is to find them.

24. 'And the World War II occurred, giving birth to the History Channel...'
I can't remember which comedian said that, but I thought it was right on the money.

Fifteen years ago in England all you could find on the telly were dramas related to WW II. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that there aren't a hundred shows dedicated to 9/11: "CSI: 9/11" "9/11 In The Family" "This Old 9/11" It's bad enough that "9/11" has become the generic GOP reason for every bullshit idea they want to force down our throats.

I can't wait until Bush is out of order. All I wanted for Christmas was to see Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld standing before the World Court charged with crimes against humanity. Let's see if Santa grants that wish.

25. Yes. They're an embarrassment.
Ever since they stated playing all these silly "Da Vinci Code"-type alternative biblical histories and other conspiracy "documentaries," it seems silly to call it that.

29. history international has some good material on sometimes.
Edited on Wed Dec-31-08 05:44 PM by MATTMAN
Modern Marvels is bloated, and I am tired of the monster and ufo lore shows. I refuse to watch Iceroad Truckers and religious programs. However, Gangland and The Universe are have been very interesting. So I always flip on History Internationale hopeing that they are showing shelved reruns of History Mysteries.
