Attention all PS3 owners!
Source: http://folding.stanford.edu/

Our goal: to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software. Folding@Home is a distributed computing project -- people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer makes the project closer to our goals.

Folding@Home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems thousands to millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.

PS3' 1.6 patch adds the feature Folding at home to your XMB under internet. It's easy to do and a good way to put you PS3 computing power to good use while your not playing games. Please if you have one take the 5 minutes it takes to install the program, and help your fellow man.

1. You might as well use your PS3 for this purpose
It's not like there's many games worth playing on it.

Resistance, Motostorm, Fightnight, Oblivion. Many more to come. Oh yeah I have a 360 and the Wii's graphics suck.

Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 01:11 PM by Tempest
I have a PS2 and just finished God of War II (great game). Funny how it wasn't made available on the PS3.

The facts are out there, and even admitted to by Sony, that they screwed the pooch on the PS3. That's why the president of Sony Entertainment was demoted.

Of all the games you listed, only Motostorm (despite it's problems) is worth playing according to friends of mine who on the PS3. And Oblivion has been available on the 360 for a year. I've played Resistance and it's no better than Killzone (which I own).

If you think the graphics on the 360 suck, you must hate the graphics on the PS3. Reviews and comparisons of the same games available for both systems have proven the 360 graphics are superior. Not only that, but the graphics chip in the PS3 is inferior at this time to the 360. Half of the graphics chip in the PS3 isn't even being used because the programmers haven't figured out how to program for it or even if it will be financially viable to develop for it.

There's also the issue of the blu-ray disk drive being much slower than the 360 drive. The drive in the PS3 is so slow, Oblivion on the PS3 isn't being improved, it's being copied over several times on the disk just to improve the speed. And even with the duplicate copying, the load times are still going to be slower than on the 360 according to Bethesda.

Then there's the issue of Playstation exclusives becoming available on the 360. The reason given by the developers? Because there's not enough money in staying exclusive to the PS3 like there was with the PS2.

8. You are obviously a fan boy.
Both systems have there ups and downs.

They were working on GOW2 before the PS3 dev. kits came out. GOW3 will be a PS3 exclusive.

Resistance is the best game out, Motostorm is good but can't compete with 40 player online.

First of all I never said graphics suck on the 360. I said they suck on the wii. I have both and can tell you Oblivion looks much better on the PS3, and load times are faster.

Blu-ray is winning the format war.

Lots of exclusives left.

11. You obviously don't know what a fanboy is
I own a Microsoft Xbox and the 360, a Sony Playstation 2 and a Nintendo Gamecube. I've owned game systems from every manufacturer over the years.

That makes me the EXACT OPPOSITE of a fanboy.

"Oblivion looks much better on the PS3"

It was only released a couple of days ago and I'm betting you haven't seen it on the PS3 yet. Except for many the non-game CGI advertisements from Sony.

"Blu-ray is winning the format war"

Wrong.

Sales are so close that no one is winning the format war. And with manufacturers coming out with dual format DVD players, there will be a market for both HD and Blu-ray.

"Devil May Cry 4"
Nope, coming to the 360.

"Final Fantasy Xlll"
Nope, coming to the 360.

So are several of the other games on your list.

Something else to consider: Not one PS3 game shows up on the top ten list of games sold. Not since the PS3 was released. The list is controlled by the Wii and the PS2.

You obviously don't follow the game console market so it makes no sense to continue.

13. Apparently you don't either.
You don't have a PS3 and your willing to trash it. That makes you a 360 fan boy.

I got Oblivion the day it came out on the PS3, and it looks better than the 360. Objects don't drop off screen like they did on 360, As a matter of fact there are new patches coming out to try to but the 360's texture and lighting properties.

Gears of War was the only game I have liked so far on the 360.

There are a lot of people that jumped on the 360 bandwagon. They act a lot like the people that jumped on the W bandwagon in 2000.

and it's you. You emotionally reacted to someone knocking the system you bought. You're a fanboy.

Me, I don't have a PS3. I don't have a 360. I don't have a Wii. I don't have any horse in this race. (Full disclosure: I had a Gamecube.) However, it's pretty obvious to me that Sony's on the losing end of this round of the console wars. When people say that Sony screwed up, it's not because they love their Wiis or 360s. It's because Sony screwed up.

21. When the Sony executive in charge of the PS3 gets demoted
You know they screwed up.

And in less than three months after it was released Sony is already talking about lowering the price.

Sony is also cutting back on on support for PS2 games. A successful launch doesn't do that.

For the record, I'll buy a PS3 when the price goes down and there's enough exclusive games worth playing on it. Recently more and more Sony exclusive developers are moving over to the 360 as well as continuing PS3 development. Devil May Cry 4 and Final Fantasy 13 are both coming to the 360.

19. You're hopeless
If I were a fanboy, I'd also be trashing the PS2. I own, and enjoy the PS2.

"I got Oblivion the day it came out on the PS3"
Considering it only shipped two days ago, I doubt you've had a chance to spend enough time on it to make an intelligent comparison with the 360.

"Objects don't drop off screen like they did on 360"
After playing it for more than 500 hours, I never had an object drop off the screen.

"Gears of War was the only game I have liked so far on the 360"
So why did you buy one? Have you played Prey, for example? Or Crackdown?

"There are a lot of people that jumped on the 360 bandwagon"
That doesn't make them fanboys. Many people, like yourself as you say, own a 360 along with other game systems.

And since you seem to not know, a fanboy is someone who is console specific and refuses to purchase or use a gaming system from any manufacturer other than the one they support.

But if you want to use what you consider a fanboy, you're also a fanboy the way you trash talk the 360.

53. Let's try to get on a little better footing.
I understand what you are saying, but I think you have misunderstood were I am coming from. I have all the systems and they are each good at there own things. I do apologize if I was mistaken that you were a fanboy. That doesn't mean I agree with all the hate the PS3 gets. It doesn't deserve it. The reason I made this post was to praise the PS3 for doing something that could lend a little help to the scientific community. That is really what this thread should be about. Your first post on here was an insult about the system, which I took exception to because it had nothing to do with the topic.

59. I could be accused of being a PS3 fanboy, but the selection of games really does suck
I was lucky enough to snag the 60GB model back in December, but I've had the same 3 games since then. Resistance really is an awesome game in almost all respects. Call of Duty 3 is decent (looks nice), but gets old quickly. Too much of the same thing. And Full Auto 2 is pretty lame even on the PS3 version. MLB 2K7 looks cool, so I'll probably buy that next.

The PS3 is an incredible machine (after about 4 firmware updates and a lot of wireless LAN hassles). Graphics are superb and a lot of the mechanics/menus are very well though out. Now that the firmware is finally stable, the machine works flawlessly. It runs hot, but everything I haven't seen any machine failures confirmed.

That said, I keep reading about a 360 update complete with HDMI and integrated HD-DVD, which ould be much more compelling. PS3 graphics look a little better than the 360 to me. It'll be interesting to see what all the "cell" processing can do since no game to date has taken advantage of it yet. The 360 looks good, but most of the games appear to be a PC-game port. I do like what I've seen in the WII but I won't buy that until the price drops. Will likely get a 360 once that one drops too.

I like my PS3, but it's the absolute crap selection of launch games that ticks me off. No one knows if anyone is going to win this "war" with this generation. It's all still so early, considering the projected 5+ year lifespan of each of these machines. I'll be patient for awhile longer, but I want my damned GTA and Resident Evil next-gen games ASAP!

74. It'll be standard on the next generation consoles
Swapping out the PS3 hard drive isn't as appealing as you might think. First, you will void the warranty and second, it takes a high priced small profile SATA drive.

I can't find any information on being able to use a USB hard drive on the PS3. I can find info on using the USB port for other purposes (bluetooth, keyboard, etc) but nothing on using it for a hard drive.

20. Lots of those exclusives are no longer exclusives.
Devil May Cry 4 is coming to the 360, same thing with Virtua Fighter 5. And it's now looking like Final Fantasy XIII is coming to the 360 too. I'm pretty sure that Unreal Tournament 07 (now called Unreal Tournament 3) was never an exclusive, but it certainly isn't now. I'm guessing by the time a bunch of these are released, they won't be exclusives either. Developers are realizing that with this current generation of consoles that exclusivity isn't financially viable. Especially when working with a system as difficult to develop for as the PS3.

I'm not a fanboy either. I own a 360, but I might get a PS3 in the future if the cost goes down, mostly in order to get a cheap Blu-ray player, but MGS4 does look incredible. I'm just a bit disappointed in the PS3 because I loved my PS2, and a year ago I had such high hopes.

23. VF5 may become a 360 exclusive
That's what the developers are hinting at.

According to reports, developers have to sell 500,000 copies of a game before they consider it a financial success. There's not that many PS3's that have been sold. And that's why Playstation exclusives are going over to the 360 as well.

Unless you can afford a HD TV with 1080p, you won't tell the difference between Blu-ray and HD. And not many people can afford that kind of a TV.

31. That's not likely...
Considering that it's already out on the PS3. It should be coming to the 360 in a month or so. Oh, and HD-DVD supports 1080P as well, it just wasn't present in the first few player models. Also, HD-DVD uses a far more efficient compression algorithm for its video with MPEG4 as opposed to the VC-1 compression that Blu-ray is using now. So even though HD-DVD doesn't have the storage capacity that Blu-ray has as of yet, it's still capable of producing better video due to its efficiency.

37. I was looking at an article from a year ago
At the time development for VF5 on the PS3 was put on hold and was rumored to be on the chopping block.

HD supports 1080p, but doesn't look as good as Blu-ray on the same TV (at least to me). I was in Best Buy going through a Blu-ray demonstration and they did a side-by-side comparison (same make and model TV was used).

New Blu-ray disks are using the MPEG4 AVC compression. They worked out the issues.

And HD is catching up to Blu-ray on storage capacity. They're up to 40GB dual layer now.

43. I have yet to see a Blu-ray video using MPEG4
I'll reserve judgement until I see them side by side on my equipment. My projector supports 720P, so I guess 1080P would be lost on me anyway. I do have a monitor which supports resolutions above 1080P, but it's only 24", so I'd imagine that's too small to appreciate the extra resolution anyway. I'm kind of pushing for HD-DVD to win out because I'd much rather buy the $200 360 add-on than buying a standalone player for more than $500. Only time will tell.

At least two I know of: Behind Enemy Lines and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Nothing to get excited about, that's for sure.

The problems I have with the 360 add-on HD drive is that it doesn't support the disk menus and the audio capabilities are lacking as well. I have a DTS surround sound system and the drive doesn't support it.

67. Is there a reason True DTS and TrueHD can't be passed via optical?
I mean, toslink is a fully digital medium, I don't see why it wouldn't be able to pass on those signals to a receiver which is capable of decoding them. I know HDMI 1.3 was designed in order to pass on those signals concurrently with video, but I don't see why the optical out on the 360 couldn't pass on the audio alone.

70. Figured it out...
The HD-DVD add on can, indeed, pass all current next-gen audio formats via toslink. It's just that many current receivers can only play back via analog inputs, or in more recent models via HDMI. Once receivers with built-in decoders become more prominent, this won't be an issue.

72. We're getting way beyond my expertise
But it has something to do with grounding. HDMI allows for grounding and optical doesn't. I'd have to research it but, I seem to remember grounding an audio signal improves it. I also remember something about distances and grounding. Even without grounding, optical is better for longer cable lengths. Although we're talking about distances beyond what would be used in this circumstances.

Time to call in an electrical engineer.

75. As long as an audio signal remains in the digital domain, it's pristine...
Optical cables only limitation is the speed of light, if you can get the transmitting lasers and receivers to accept a faster signal, you can increase its bandwidth. The only reason that HDMI is able to pass on these signals to be decoded by receivers internally as opposed to pre-processed as in the case of optical is that HDMI has content protection built in. Toslink has more than enough bandwidth to handle any current and future audio formats. So, it's not that optical can't, the content providers won't. But that's a bit of a moot point if it can be decoded prior to reaching your receiver (audiophiles may disagree in that in this instance, the audio is spending more time in analog as opposed to being entirely digital until the signal reaches your receiver, but it's a difference not many are likely to notice.)

some sort of specification or standard. It's Sony marketing drivel for 1080p. The 360 can do games in 1080p via component and HD-DVD in 1080p via VGA. The only reason that 1080p is limited to (mostly) HDMI is because of content protection schemes, not technical reasons. As a matter of fact, I think HDMI sucks. Gimme DVI any day of the week.

77. DVI is becoming the standard for computer monitors
There's no reason why it couldn't become the standard for all video devices. I bet we'll see it on the next generation of consoles.

Currently there are few TVs sold that support VGA or 1080 so it's not really an issue for most of us. It'll be a some time before I'll be able to afford a TV capable of 1080p. At this point all I can do is stand in front of one at Best Buy and drool.

As far as TrueHD, MS promised it on the 360 but didn't deliver. It must have been to put a scare into Sony and nothing more.

My friends and I had a boxing match a few weeks back on Wii sports. What a sight that was, a bunch of adults flailing around at each other LOL :)

You know, the ones where people are accidently hitting each other and losing their grip and smashing up their TV and knick-knacks. ;)

There was a problem with the straps breaking. There was a recall on the straps.

40. Sony lost its dominance in Japan to the Wii
The fact that the PS3 got p'wned in Sony's own backyard by what Sony belittled every chance they got must have been especially gratifying to Nintendo.

Sony knocked Nintendo off both at home and abroad. Sony grew to embrace the worst, most arrogant aspects of Nintendo. Nintendo got smart--and innovative--and it looks like it's taking back its crown. This will be a very interesting round.

They'll circle around sizing each other up.

The next round of consoles will be what distances one from the other, IMO.

81. Nobody's asking its graphics to.
Go back and look at your old PlayStation games. Cutting-edge graphics at the time, now ugly, blocky, and unwatchable. Look at a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis game. Still as crisp and good-looking as the day it came out. Heck, StarCraft's aged better than WarCraft III. Similarly, Homeworld still looks gorgeous. Quake III doesn't. Graphical power wows when it first comes out. Solid graphical design will look good forever. I'll bet you that in ten years, Wii Sports looks better than Gears of War. Pretty graphics fade.

What matters to most of the potential market isn't how many polygons it pushes. (There are those for whom it does, and they should buy a 360) What matters to most is how good the games are. Control matters. Depth of gameplay matters. Fun (yes, fun) matters above all. And in that regard--and judging from sales figures--Wii seems to be more than holding its own.

5. But according to Sony, the PS3 is a computer
Sony boss Howard Stringer:

"PS3 is after a different audience and it can be whatever it wants - a home server, game device, even a computer."

He went on to say the PS3 was a dessert topping AND a floor wax.

I never stated which console was better.

I merely pointed out, correctly, that you might as well use the PS3 for something other than gaming because as a game console (which is what it was marketed as) it currently sucks.

And as far as the original intent of your thread, you didn't have to respond to my one line post, so in effect you contributed to what you perceive as an affront. Me thinks thou protest too much.

how much electricity does a PS3 draw? Somewhere in the U.S. a large mass of coal is being burned for a device that would otherwise not be on.

18. Actually, distributed computing is far more efficient.
It's much more efficient to use the billions of cycles that go wasted every minute across the world, as many computers are left on and taskless 24/7. However, I agree that the PS3 is not that efficient for this purpose, since (I would assume) it wouldn't otherwise be on.

34. Definitely.
It's a shame that's the console that ended Sega's career in the console making business. It was the first of the next-gen systems, yet it had graphics which seemed to put even the Xbox to shame. It had full screen anti-aliasing which the PS2 lacked, super quick loading times, and most importantly, great games. I would have loved to have seen what Sega would have created to compete with the 360, PS3 and Wii. Alas, it will never happen.

Even with narrow band.

On a PC, 150 Ping is damn near unplayable. But Sega figured out how to make it work. Even the voice recognition was ahead of it's time, console-wise.

What a bizarre game. It included a mic which attached to your controller. You'd start off with a little larva type creature and he'd grow into this fully functioning Seaman with the support you provide from the microphone.

There was game called Alien Front Online that I used the mic for and played quite a bit before they shut those servers down.

I also remember that you could even talk to other folk online DC to DC.

Here's a site with DC servers that are still available if you're interested:

I still have my DC, but it's currently at Serv-pro due to a fire we had. I might brush it off once I get it back. I assume you'd need dial up access to use any of its online functionality? Did they release an ethernet adapter for it? That would be sweet. I so want a Dreamcast 2.

Knock it all you like, but there isn't a better party system, even still. The thing sucked for single-player, sure, but when you've got three friends over, nothing better than GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart 64, or Smash Brothers.

Dreamcast was the best system of its generation, though. I bought one for $30 on eBay. Ended up liking it more than my GameCube.

Never had that problem with Mariokart 64, at least emulation allows high resolution when playing old N64 games like Cruis'n USA or Castlevania.
