Does Roland Burris really believe he can strong arm his way into the Senate?
Edited on Sat Jan-03-09 04:12 PM by RiverStone
I hope there is some middle ground. I have nothing against Burris, he seems to be a person of integrity and good service. Heard him on CNN say that he has a constitutional right to show up on The Hill next week; hopefully, that won't lead to some awkward confrontation.

Blago is an annoying fly in the Obama transition team effort. Blago also is in the unique position to not turn this situation into more of a circus, but that would mean making a selfless act for the good of the party; highly doubtful of that coming from this arrogant, narcissistic creep.

The people of Ill deserve equal representation in the Senate, lets hope this resolves soon with impeachment.

1. It's perfectly legal. The IL Dem's dropped the ball by not voting for "a special election."
Remember, Blago has NOT yet even been formally indicted, much less convicted of anything.

I'm ashamed of Harry Reid stepping in so early. IF ONLY gutless Harry had the PASSION for filibustering the Alito Confirmation AS MUCH as his dislike of Blago THEN he could have rightly earned his "Senator" title. Harry Reid cannot go soon enough from the Majority Leader's seat to please me.

2. A special election was too much of a risk of electing a Pub.
Understandably, the Dems have a terrible reputation in Ill right now, much the same as the Pubs do on the Fed level. I can't blame the Ill
Dems for not wanting to take that risk.

3. Not sure about the legality, but I agree with you fully on Harry

Gutless Harry should NOT be our leader in the Senate!

The tough part is (so say the talking heads) how can you seat Burris and NOT seat Al Franken? MN law states a person can't be seated until the election is certified. As it appears Blago abused his power as Gov and is on his way to certain impeachment, the question of a politician acting with authority (to appoint) when he has likely committed impeachable offenses is questionable at best. IMO neither Al or Burris deserve a seat, yet. If the shoe was politically on the other foot - would we want a rethug seated if an obviously corrupt rethug Gov appointed him?

I know, he has not formally been sanctioned...yet. But those tapes are equal to a smoking gun and Blago trying to force the issue is just plain wrong.

10. The appointment process is not yet complete
Its being slow rolled. There will be a scene. Obama and Biden need to step in behind the scenes to calm things down and get this off the front page.

6. If there is no evidence that Blago made some bribery type bargain with Burrus,
Edited on Sat Jan-03-09 05:25 PM by Uncle Joe
then I believe Burrus should be confirmed on his own merits.

That would be the simplest way out of this mess.

8. I wonder what % of the public thinks Blago was convicted already?
I haven't heard anyone discuss the presumption of innocence. I bet if you did a survey most people would say he was already found guilty. By no means am I saying he is innocent; I merely object to the *presumption of guilt* by the media, the public, and even Congressional Democrats.

14. Though your technically correct, his guilt seems to be in plain sight
We can go through many months of trial and appeal, or we can agree that there is no ambiguity when you listen to what he said on those tapes.

We all know what's right and wrong here, legalese aside.

Blago could do the best thing for everyone, and bow the fuck out --- alas, he will go down kicking and screaming. In the process, he will make a mockery of the office he was amazingly elected to.

12. Bullshit, you don't know what you are talking about
Edited on Sat Jan-03-09 05:49 PM by bamalib
I was in Illinois at that time and followed the case closely. Cruz was not "obviously innocent" since he revealed to the police crime scene details an details of the girl's body known only to the police. He said he had a "dream about it". Two juries convicted him and a third would have except witnesses began to vanish.

15. What are you hearing on the streets?
Since it's your home, are folks just mad as hell at Blago? I assume people believe impeachment can't come fast enough. We all heard what he said on those tapes...

I say throw his crooked ass out, if he wants to sue someone for defamation of character - go for it. He would lose.
