16. It's notable that this is the first mass layoff in their 34-year history
it had only made relatively limited staff cuts after acquiring companies or reorganizing product groups.

In addition, I've known a lot of people who work or worked for MS and they treat their people very well. In fact, I'm hard pressed to think of any other people who were happier with their jobs.

17. yes, noted.
They are a huge company. 5000 is probably a drop in the bucket. Still I would like to have seen the execs sharing some pain. Companies must strive to make the moral, responsible decisions during this crisis.

18. I agree.
I am just sometimes disappointed at how they are demonized ALL the time. They do a lot of good, too. The world would be a different place if not for them.

In addition, they were pioneers in offering same-sex parter benefits, rate very well with HRC and, again, anecdotally, really treat their employees well.

Microsoft to axe 5,000, no job cuts in India

NEW YORK: Starting with 1,400 job cuts, software giant Microsoft will slash 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months.

"Microsoft will eliminate up to 5,000 jobs in R&D, HR, marketing, sales, finance, legal, and IT over the next 18 months, including 1,400 jobs today," the company said in a statement.

The layoff, however, would not be impacting the Indian operations. "It's not going to impact us. No job cuts in India," a Microsoft India spokesperson said in New Delhi.

20. You don't layoff people based on last quarter's profit, you lay off people based on
next year's projected workload. I've survived six downsizings in the last 2 years in the homebuilding industry and each time it was an exercise based on how much work needed to get done next year and how many people it took to do it.

21. Yet APPLE is doing fine, thank you very much! And Jobs takes NO PAY
or just $1 a year salary.

Running a profitable company starts at the top -- when
you have a chief executive like Steve Jobs taking no
pay or a minimal salary, you inspire teamwork and going
that extra mile ... It's all about the IDEAS, not about
the love of profits. Jobs LOVES Apple; Gates and co.
are more concerned about just monopolizing the market
and raking in the bucks ...

22. Steve Jobs takes no salary
to avoid paying Income tax.

http://blog.wired.com/business/2007/11/steve-jobs-may.html

Jobs has taken only a token annual salary of $1 since returning to Apple in 1996, for which he is recognized as the world's lowest-paid CEO by Guinness World Records. He is well-compensated by other means, however, being the frequent recipient of gifts from Apple's board of directors, such as a Gulfstream Jet and tens of millions of shares in restricted stock, which have contributed to Jobs's estimated net worth of $5.7 billion. (One incentive for this form of compensation: Capital gains tax on stock market profits is less exacting than federal income tax on earnings.)

36. Jerry Yang does the same thing and the whole reason why seems to slip people's minds.
You gotta love CEOs with $1 to middle class salaries. How much are they worth? NOT middle class wages.

Can't tax WEALTH, only the income generated FROM that wealth. It's a breeze paying taxes on a buck or $80,000 when you're already worth billion$. Surprised more CEOs don't do this. :eyes:
