As usual, we had a good response to our call for moderators, and it was extremely difficult to narrow the field down. We had to turn down a number of very qualified people. We hope that everyone who applied to serve as a moderator this turn will consider applying again next term.

A moderator switch is always a little chaotic, so I want to apologize in advance for any problems that may arise over the next few days. Thank you for your understanding.

57. Observations on the Moderating Thing...

Lemme haul out my Oldtimer soapbox here for a minute, and make a couple of observations.

If you kids only knew what this place was like, back in the Spring of aught-one...

How many major upgrades have we been through in the site software, hardware, forum software, all that stuff?

Many.

Back then it all seemed so simple...

In spite of enthusiastic participation and support since the early days of this site, I've never made the Big Commitment to moderating before. I've always admired those who did.

Especially as the site grew and grew and grew, and the issues of site management and fairness and technical whizdangs and suchlike got so complicated, and sometimes controversial. It was sort of hard to imagine how any group of volunteers could do the task at all, much less do it so competently and, on the whole, unobtrusively.

And now I are one. I have my Secret Moderator Decoder Ring and the Secret Moderator Handshake and all that cool stuff. And a chance to see a little more of the "behind the scenes" aspect of running a website as large and popular as DU.

And I am IMPRESSED.

The site admins have done an amazing job of providing tools to make the seemingly-impossible not only possible, but comparatively easy (in the technical sense. The 'tough calls' aspect, well, that will always be challenging though they've done a lot to make that consistent and fair as well.)

And having a chance to peer at the backstage evidence of my illustrious predecessors' work, I must concur with all these kudos, and then some. Our retiring mods leave big shoes to fill. (But seriously, guys, couldn't you have taken the used Odor-Eaters with ya? Eeeeeeeeyew....)

We are enormously fortunate here on DU to have site admins dedicated to running a top-quality site and making easy for the volunteers to help, and to have so many committed, hard-working volunteers to do the daily chores of keeping the joint habitable.

I only hope I can live up to the standards set by previous generations of moderators.

Now, where did I put that Big Red Button...?

The pump is from the fuel system of a Saturn V rocket and he powers it with an 18-cylinder 2,200-hp radial engine from a B-29.

We lost three moderators the first time he fired it up, but after he installed the 5-point harnesses our loss rate is waaaaaaaay down.
