3. Depends on the legislation or parliamentary maneuver- but generally yes
and on important votes there should be SERIOUS consequences for crossing over and voting with Republicans.

Herein lies the root of many of the Democrats' problems.

6. I voted no, but you really need an OTHER.
OTHER--They should vote the way they'd like, except when the Speaker, her minions or the Majority Leader crawls up their ass and threatens them with loss of needed campaign funding in their next outing.

Because that IS the way it works when "party discipline" is invoked.

to its knees or are not in keeping with our defining documents or values.

13. The herd mentality isn't for the Democrats
I think that differences of opinion can help keep the dialogue of the party going and ensure that people don't become locked within an ideology that is too narrow. We don't want to become like the House Republicans, because we want democrats to vote based on the best interests of their state as well as the country. We don't want to discourage reaching across the aisle on some issues. I would expect that Democrats vote with the party on most of the issues. We can't have someone who votes wtih the Repubs 50% of the time.

16. It would be nice, and amazing, if they voted what was best for the country.
But, politicians of any persuasion have little record of doing so.

22. if Democrats were still guided by fundamental principle as they once were,
instead of by Clintonian-DLC political game-playing, they'd at least work together to ensure that the important stuff passes.

24. We should support the President's agenda
Democrats have a demonstrated ability to fail to back their presidents--ask Clinton or Carter about that. We have an incredible opportunity, and I'd hate to see it squandered simply to create the illusion of bipartisanship, particularly given the total lack of accommodation given the minority when the Republicans were in power.

You ask a silly question. We know not all Democrats will vote the same way on every vote--even the Republicans don't do that. The real question is whether the party will come together in Congress on the votes that really matter, in the face of tough minority opposition--I hope that they do.

Democrats to vote in lockstep.
