My LTTE (re: Bush's refusal to talk about his legacy/record)
"History will be the judge..."

That's what George W. Bush and his few remaining supporters are saying. The argument, as explained by Bush himself, goes something like this: It's too soon to judge his decisions and their results; we have to wait for "history" (presumably several decades from now) to render a verdict.

The guy has said some pretty bizarre things over the years and the twenty-percenters who excuse everything he did never cared, so it's not surprising that they're swallowing this one hook, line and sinker, as well.

Consider the absurdity of this idea: It assumes that nothing can be judged as it is happening (or even shortly thereafter).

So what exactly was Bush running on in 2004? Was it too soon for the people who voted for him to judge him favorably? Why is he now claiming certain successes in the "war on terror"? Isn't it too soon for that?

Or is this "too soon" argument only applicable to areas in which his legacy is vulnerable?

I'd love to hear him (or his supporters) answer those questions and explain their theory of delayed reaction political judgments. But what I'd most like to know is, will Bush loyalists who subscribe to this theory not criticize President Obama throughout his entire presidency because it's too soon? Will they adhere to the notion that only history can judge him, long after he has left office?

I wonder....
