How to handle the Republicans while the Democrats are in charge
Just pay them lip service. Give everyone the illusion that they have a say, which they don't, yet pursue the Democratic agenda without delay.

In other words, take CHARGE and DRIVE.

Today's Republicans are road bumps, don't make them into closed roads.

1. That's the best strategy
Seems to me like the President is doing just that.

I love it.

3. Spankings. I bet Maria Shriver is having a field day...
Wasn't Gray Davis recalled for less?

And I agree; the Democrats need to take real charge. The Republicans did it first, Obama reached out his hand, and they continued to play games. Change is needed indeed.

4. You can improve the odds by constantly trying to get the most moderate Repubs to peel away.
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 10:04 PM by Selatius
When you want to pass a bill in the Senate and House, appeal to those few moderate Repubs by cutting them deals. For instance, we could peel off some moderate Repubs by offering financial stimulus money for infrastructure, schools, health care, etc. They could then go back to their districts with something in hand.

This tactic may mean the difference between a successful filibuster and a failed one that was broken with a cloture vote.

6. And if all else fails find a large broom closet in the Capitol Building
and lock them in it! One question: Didn't 12 Democrats vote against the package? Who were they?

8. I agree about the lip service.
And if push comes to shove, give them the 'ole, "elections have consequences, you lost, if the citizens wanted you to keep making the decisions, they would have voted for you."

Unfortunately, it's unlikely that this will happen. It seems that Obama is genuine about being bipartisan, and our Democratic leaders in Congress are big pushovers like always. The funny part is, the Democratic leaders seem more content to challenge OBAMA than they did the Republican administration. Go figure.
