I think the Obama Administration has played this game very well...framing the opposition. While I'm sure President Obama would have loved to have a few GOOPers sign on, he and Emanuel knew this wasn't going to be easy since the majority of Repugnicans still in the House are from the wingnut branch of the party...most in very safe red districts who put party above country. Look at how doubled over they are in their own hypocricies in opposing the President today while they went lock-step with boooshie all the way to electoral oblivion. May they keep up the good work.
The game here is who gets to set the tone...one the GOOP is vainly trying to hold onto despite having been elected out of any real power. The problem is these asses are totally tone deaf. There's a void in leadership that appears to have been filled by Rushbo and his ilk...forcing this corrupt party further to the right and away from both the mainstream and the majority. President Obama surely knows this...and just like how Clinton played (and later destroyed Gingrich), Obama now can steamroll the Repugnicans...or, even better, play one side of their party against the other.
Obama has the votes in the House...we saw that yesterday. Cantor and Boner can screetch and piss and moan, they're doing it for the "base" as they proved that they don't want to be partners in moving this country forward and their obstructionism is for all the world to see. What President Obama is hoping for is to grab a repugnican vote or two or four in the Senate...get over the 60 threshold to ensure his legislation passes. That's where the real pressure is being applied...and one you aren't going to hear about. We saw this strategy at work in the Geitner confirmation...reaching out got the votes needed despite several Democrats voting in the negative.
The fun now is to see how the GOOP tries to find who is their leader. While they deny Rushbo has much influence, he's been at the vanguard of this party's rise and fall for the past 20 years. The light needs to stay on Rushbo and his ilk...let them spew as much bile as they can because the more they do, the further they alienate not only a majority of the American people, but a critical slice of the GOOP as well.
Cheers...
