Conservatives Losing It
http://www.ryanavent.com/blog/?p=1768

. . . The Wall Street Journal today is unloading with both barrels, with hilarious results. Keep in mind that the Journal is supposed to be the nation’s business paper of record. Here’s a snippet from an editorial:

Some $30 billion, or less than 5% of the spending in the bill, is for fixing bridges or other highway projects. There’s another $40 billion for broadband and electric grid development, airports and clean water projects that are arguably worthwhile priorities.

Add the roughly $20 billion for business tax cuts, and by our estimate only $90 billion out of $825 billion, or about 12 cents of every $1, is for something that can plausibly be considered a growth stimulus.

This is a freaking joke. It’s crank econ of the first order. There’s this bizarre conception of free markets at work, where rail and transit are bad investments because they don’t turn profits, but highway spending is ok. Gas tax revenues and user fees don’t cover highway costs at the best of times; they’ve come nowhere close over the past couple of years, as vehicle miles traveled have fallen. And whatever logic is used to label business tax cuts as “growth stimulus” but the remainder of the tax cuts as chopped liver would be dismissed as hackery by any decent economist on the left or right. . .

4. Maybe if you would point out what part of the package might do that...
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 02:10 PM by JHB
...it would be worth discussing.

But unless you can give a concrete source, we're just going to treat it as just another fraudulent talking point pulled out of the ass of some conservative talk-show ranter.

8. Not to mention
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 02:15 PM by bain_sidhe
the huge chunk that is going as un-assigned grants to state governments, many of which will turn around and use them for, you guessed it, repairing/improving roads and bridges and sewer systems and water treatment and renewable energy installations... you know, what some folks call "infrastructure."

**edited to add:

and what they don't use for that, they'll likely be using for poverty/assistance programs, which is also stimulative...

10. There is money for both
Separately. The money for the stats, including that contraceptive money they cut, is so that state employees don't have to take 10% cuts, like they are in California.

Hopefully they will get that state by state breakdown out soon because they've done a terrible job rolling this out.
