We received a "humorous" e-mail regarding our companies "weapons" policy.
They are laying off 8-900 of us at the plant. The day everyone was told the "good" news H.R. sent out an e-mail stating you would be fired for possessing any type of weapon on company property. I am not exaggerating when they listed EVERY possible weapon they could imagine INCLUDING knives over 4" (which most everyone has at the plant for use in production), "Staffs" which could be confused with broom handles and a few other items that we use every day. What is upsetting is they listed pepper spray & tasers. They have told employees that these self defense items were not to be carried to/from work. Even if an employee has in in their vehicle parked in the lot it is grounds for termination. I just hope nobody has a stalker they are worried about.

I have a carry permit but have decided to refrain from leaving the weapon in my vehicle when I am parked there. I suspect that they will be conducting random vehicle searches over the next few months.

The thing that I find puzzling is this; If a disgruntled employee was planning to "go postal" and probably swallow the gun when he is finished, is he going to be worried about being fired?

2. They likely can't search your vehicle, which remains your property even if it's on theirs
But across-the-board weapon bans on company property aren't new or unusual. I suspect that they're the norm in the corporate world, and since we're talking about privately-owned property, I believe that the property-owner's rights in this regard are given priority over a license to carry.

Heck, even 7-11 has a blanket "no weapons" policy for its employees, no matter how shitty the neighborhood they have to walk through to get to work.

But I don't think that the company would be able to search your vehicle without your permission, and (AFAIK) your refusal to submit to search can't be used as grounds for termination (of course, companies are very good at trumping up grounds for termination...).

6. I wasn't aware of that. Thanks.
Does that apply to vehicles, or merely to items carried onto the premises? Or both?

11. both, in my neck of the woods.
corp rules say you're expected to comply with a request to search your personal belongings, and that any personal belongings you bring onto company property are subject to search. Read your company policies for the answer that pertains to you.

work and when wife got off work she stopped and got the groceries out of his truck to take home. There was a unopened six pack of beer among the groceries. They got him for having alcohol on company property.

17. They have been known to prowl the lot looking into vehicles.
One idiot left a half smoked joint in his ashtray and was terminated for that.

4. Self-defense is too risky
For the good of society and in the interest of public safety, let yourself and your companions be beaten, robbed, and/or raped. :eyes:

We're reached the point where business are outlawing tools for self-defence on their property so they are protected legally. And by doing that, we're actually making the situation worse.

5. I worked at a nuclear power plant construction site
north of Baton Rouge, and the Teamsters all carried handguns. It was the wild west until one of them shot another and the union contract was revised to keep the guns off site.

13. Yes they did...
Along with throwing stars & samuri swords. They also included BY NAME airsoft guns, BB guns, pellet guns & paintball guns. You name it they included it. They did not mention WMD's however and for that failure they will suffer:evilgrin:

9. supremely ironic, that.
The day the layoffs are announced, the weapons ban is announced.

Sounds like company paranoia as well as an excuse to fire a person.

I can hear it now...

" they fired me and I wanna go postal, but it is illegal to bring weapons to the plant".

15. I always feel uncomfortable leaving my pistol in the car too
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 05:50 PM by ThomWV
In this state any company can post a sign at the door telling you that you can't bring a weapon in and part of the deal with the Carry Permit is that means us. I have a lockable glove compartment in my truck and of course I lock the cab too, but I always feel uncomfortable knowing how often vehicles are broken into and how easy it is to do it. Of course we can't carry into schools or public buildings (police stations, court houses) either but if for some reason I'm heading for one of them I generally leave the old Beretta home.

16. Our lot is fenced w/security & cameras.
It's in an industrial park and we have never had issues with car burglaries. I not only have to leave the handgun at home but also the pepper spray I carry in the truck. Some people may look upon me as "paranoid" but I have actually had to USE the pepper spray in one incident.(it was a better option than drawing my handgun)

I was one of the ones let go but I have three more months before my separation date. (lot of work their gonna get out of me!) I don't want to risk losing my severance package. The funny thing is I skipped all the emotional responses to being fired and went right to extreme relief. I hated the job & was only sticking around for the minimum pension. I hated every minute on the job for the past five years & in the entire 18 years I was there I can not recall ONE "fun" day that I actually enjoyed.
