http://voices.washingtonpost.com/postpartisan/2009/02/republicans_sucking_on_lemons.htmlJust how sour can House Republican leader John Boehner look?
About as sour as someone forced to suck on a lemon -- as President Barack Obama forced Republicans to do at the very opening of his speech to a joint session of Congress. Obama, who has been waging what amounts to one-man crusade to promote bipartisanship on Capitol Hill, took the occasion of his big speech to recount rather succinctly the Bush administration economic record.
“A surplus became an excuse to transfer wealth to the wealthy instead of an opportunity to invest in our future. Regulations were gutted for the sake of a quick profit at the expense of a healthy market,” the president said. “People bought homes they knew they couldn’t afford from banks and lenders who pushed those bad loans anyway. And all the while, critical debates and difficult decisions were put off for some other time on some other day.”
There’s nothing bipartisan about that -- but it pretty much sums up the last eight years. Boehner has heard it before but still, apparently, doesn’t like to. The camera caught him frowning visibly at that passage, and shifting in his seat.
Looks like he’s going to be awfully uncomfortable for the next four years.
