East Coast DUers: Snowing like crazy here in Alabama and heading your way.
Edited on Sun Mar-01-09 12:19 PM by Elwood P Dowd
Been snowing here since early this morning and moving to the northeast. We have close to 3 inches so far with more expected. Hate to think what you guys in New England might get. Have fun.

5. Must be one of those classic Nor'easters........
I lived in Westchester County, NY, from 1995-1998, and moved there just in time for the record-blitzing winter of '95-'96. I'm from Michigan, but I'd never seen THAT much snow.

8. Oh yeah... unbelievable storms. The Blizzard of 78 was amazing
although I was a bit young then. I can remember my older brothers jumping off the second story porch into a massive snow drift along the front of our house.

18. If I'm not mistaken, a "Nor'easter" would blow in from the NE.
This might be a "Sou'wester." :)

19. No, I think Nor'easters come up from the south along the coast.....
..... as I understand them.

23. Not so sure about that.
"A nor'easter is so named because the winds in a nor'easter come from the northeast, especially in the coastal areas of the Northeastern United States and Atlantic Canada. More specifically, it describes a low pressure area whose center of rotation is just off the East Coast and whose leading winds in the left forward quadrant rotate onto land from the northeast."

27. I think you are both right
the moisture comes from the south and then becomes a storm off the coast with blowing winds from the north east.... picture a hurricane circling counter-clockwise.

28. Seasonal layoffs are common for surveyors
However, Boston usually has mild winters so we don't do that. Every storm this winter we've been warned that if it's bad enough we'll shut down until spring.

I think we're close enough to spring that even if the storm's that big we'll remain open.

6. But the snow is gone!
That's the only good thing about late winter snows. They don't stay on the ground very long. It's supposed to be cold Monday and Tuesday, then we'll get another warm up. I might even be able to wash my car. I'm just so excited.

20. On a brighter note for us Michigan folks...
...I heard the first Canadian geese of the season fly by this morning (I'm near the Detroit River). Unmistakable honk, those things. I wonder if they'll freeze tonight? Might have come back too early methinks. :-)

and the snowpack this year pretty much isn't.

Southern Colorado has gotten more moisture, but it's not going to be enough.

25. Here in the DC area,
we're cold, and had some sleet and snow last night, but nothing series.

This afternoon, though, we're under a Winter Storm Warning starting at 2 pm today and lasting for 24 hours. They're predicting we'll get between 4 and 6 inches of snow.

I sure as hell hope so. I love snow, and, fifteen minutes away from where I sit, PRESIDENT OBAMA can finally have his taste of Chicago weather, at least for a tiny bit.

33. Don't toy with me........
If you knew how many times those lying thugs of weather forecasters predict big snow here and then we end up with another sunny day, you'd cry for me and my failing mental health.

I love snow. Grew up in it, and LOVE IT.

This prediction you posted is better than anything I'm getting here.

Your keyboard to G-d's ears..........................

26. Don't remind me...I always get these storms when I want them the least.
A month ago would have been fine. Next week would have been super. But no, these storms happen, without fail, every year on the last week of rehearsals before the middle school musical I direct (well, musically direct, anyway) goes up. We're supposed to have longer rehearsals tomorrow and Tuesday afternoon, but if school's closed, that rehearsal goes as well. Trying to figure out other plans now.

EVERY YEAR, this happens. You'd think we'd have backup plans in place by now. :)
