Fire truck strikes, kills 1st grader on his way home from school
A Kansas City fire truck responding to an accident scene struck and killed a first-grader this afternoon, just a block away from his school.

The boy was in the street near Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue when the fire truck hit him just before 3:40 p.m., according to a statement from the Kansas City Fire Department.

The child, an immigrant from Africa, was a student at Woodland Elementary School, 711 Woodland Avenue, Kansas City School District Spokesman Andre Riley said.

According to the fire department statement, a battalion chief, a pumper truck and another truck were dispatched at 3:34 p.m. to a motor vehicle accident at 12th Street and Chestnut Avenue. At 3:37 p.m., crew members on Pumper 10 radioed back to dispatchers that they had been involved in an injury accident at Ninth and Euclid.

3. Probably crossing in the middle of the street
There are no more crossing guards (they are too expensive!) and I know this neighborhood pretty well. This school is kitty corner from the apartment complex where this kid probably lived. I have seen kids running across this street.

Hopefully they will stop doing that now.

6. I can't even imagine how that fire crew is handling this
I immediately thought of the school as well. Those poor teachers probably tell the kids every day to be careful crossing the street.

8. My condolences to the fire crew and the kid's family
everybody will be fucked up in major ways by this...

To the kid, rest in peace.

God can't even say how many times we came close to being involved in an accident...
