100,000 women killed in fires, every year in India

2 March 2009

NEW DELHI - More than 100,000 young women were killed in fires in India in a single year, and many of those deaths were tied to domestic abuse, according to a new study published Monday.

Young Indian women are more than three times as likely to killed by fire as their male compatriots, according to an article published on the Web site of the British medical journal, The Lancet. The victims largely fell within a 15 to 34-year age group.

Domestic abuse is a serious problem in India. Women are sometimes killed in disputes over dowries; often in such disputes the victims are doused with gasoline and set ablaze, and their deaths are claimed as kitchen accidents.

In the first study of its kind and using the most recent data available, The Lancet analyzed death registrations, official questionnaires in rural areas and census figures to arrive at an estimate of 163,000 fire-related deaths in 2001, or 2 percent of all deaths. That number is six times higher than the number of such deaths reported by police. More than 106,000 of those, or 65 percent, were women.

5. I think something like that is going to have to happen in international
law, if we are every to stop the abuse of women globally.

19. Not by me.
I'd love to see a reversal of gender roles and percieved responsibilities.

18. Good luck
The situation in India is pushed for and condoned by women. It's much like the situation with clitorectomies in Africa. This is how these women define their own worth in these societies. The men oftentimes just go along with it. It's very probable that the ideas weren't originally women's... but in the time between invention and the present, it's become at least as accepted and pressured by the women as by the men.

Outlaw patriarchy, and someone will just cook up a female-led version of the same shit. Sad fact, it's humans who are fucked up, not one sex or the other

4. I read about that more than a decade ago. I can't believe it's still going
on, especially with efforts by activists to make it know to the world.

9. It's called "Bride Burning"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bride_burning

And it's a particularly nasty form of greed and social control unique to the Indian subcontinent.

14. Not true in Kerala
Intermittent Communist rule, tradition of matrilocal families, strong union tradtitions, high levels of popular political involvement, universal llteracy, and a 1:1 sex ratio. All on less than $300/year per capita income.

20. I'm sure there are some exceptions but the rule is pretty solid.
The more western and tolerent the country the better of the people are.

21. "Western" is a loose term
If you mean secular and tolerant, that was Iran in 1953 before we helped the mullahs overthrow Mossadegh. If you mean adopting the ethic of endless growth and "free" trade, I don't agree. Plenty of traditional folkways empower women, though there are just as many others that don't.

22. I mean secular and tolerant and also enlightened.
In truth with the exception of Japan... most societies that follow this path are either Western or heavily influenced by Western ideals (Hong Kong for example)

23. Nature loves females - that's why men war on women--!!!!
We're at least at 52% and evidently we'd be 54% of the population except

females keep disappearing!!!

Personally, I think we'd probably be 57% ---

kinda like the contribution to DNA of a child --

male 43% - Female 57% when you include Mitochondria.

How many females missing around the world? Millions!
