4. Actually, it was probably pathetic police reaction.
As a former cop-shop reporter, I had to often take the "breaking news" word of a police official.

The reporter probably heard the police banter on the radio, phoned in or showed up on the scene and believed, for lack of other sources, what was initially reported by the cops.

I understand the consternation on DU regarding the national media - I share this disgust - but most local reporters work very long hours for very little pay and are just doing their jobs.

5. The Pitfalls of a 24/7 Electronic News World...
Cub reporters and even the veterans are under the gun to get the latest in the fastest and if they get anything from what is considered a "reliable source", the story goes out first and the checking comes afterwards.

Ya gotta figure the media has some big stakeout location and they're all hungry to "break something/anything". It's the nature of the beast.

13. well the reporters have to do their jobs, and not just take what they think is bantering on the
radio between cops, if that is what it is.

6. That must be a really weird-looking fish, or an incredibly quick-on-the-draw
reporter.

Pretty sad - if these guys are still in the water after 48 hours, it's pretty likely that this is now a recovery rather than a rescue...

7. I will say i am on the Beach in Clearwater..and all morning the Coast guard hellicopters
have been going back and forth out deep into the gulf.
I was watching them with my binoculars.

And I live directly across from the Coast Guard station, 2 of the biggest boats are out, and two smaller ones went out early this morning. But two of their big boats are still docked, and one moderate sized boat is still in dock.

My neighbors upstairs are Search and Rescue pilots for the Coast Guard, they have been out flying daily since Saturday.

The gulf is a lot calmer today, first time since Saturday.

9. no special treatment from authorities
There are often stories around here (Tampa) about fisherman gone astray. The Coast Guard doesn't care if you're Dan Marino or just a few guys out to net some shrimp. That being said, active searches usually don't last much more than a few days, a week at most. Now the media attention on the other hand is obviously getting a boost, but that's to be expected.

Goofy to take a 20 footer out that far, particularly when ugly weather was on the way. The toughest lessons can be the least forgiving.

10. answer to your first question..yes.
There is always search and rescue like this when any boat disappears or is in distress during a storm..and people go missing. Irregardless of who it is.

21. There is not much hope for the missing football players...
That many days in cold water.. no chance.

The bodies will be found near New Orleans or Galveston. The current in the Gulf circulates counter-clockwise. Unless they get caught in the Gulfstream and get floated back down towards the Florida Keys.

22. No, not true.
The Yucatan Current flows north between Cuba and Mexico and becomes the Loop Current - which flows in a clockwise direction - then flows east along the Keys becoming the Gulf Stream. It is many miles off the Florida west coast... about 175 miles or so - the edge being approximately at the edge of the continental shelf. There is a southerly drift along the coast during the winter, this flows at about .5 knot, but is within a few miles of shore. Where the fishermen capsized, the only significant current is surface drift from the wind - it will go about .25 knots whichever way the wind is blowing. I have 45 years experience sailing (and surfing) in the eastern and southern Gulf - I know of what I speak.
