YOU can do something to stop baby seals from being clubbed to death!

Please send an e-mail to Ambassador Michael Wilson as well as Sentaor Mac Harb, both from Canada, and the EU Parliament and Prime Minister Putin.

Pass the Harb Seal Bill!
For the first time in history, a Canadian politician is proposing a law to end the suffering of baby seals. Senator Harb consulted with IFAW on this critical legislation and now he has asked us to help flood Canadian Embassies with messages of support. Please help us reach 200,000 emails and letters in the next few weeks: one for every seal killed this year. This is our chance to end the hunt forever.

Please email Canada's Ambassador urging support of the "Harb" Seal Bill to end the hunt.

2. I'd love to see the end of this yearly slaughter.
Canadian govt is complicit in this destruction of fishing competition.

7. Wow, that was in poor taste
Nothing funny about the violent deaths of seal cubs.

6. Mac Harb?
If ever there was a do-nothing politician in Canada, it was Mac Harb.

Still, I wish him luck. Oh, and by the way, your average Canadian Senator is NOT influential at all.

It's where politicians go to die (with benefits).

8. Ugh. Well, I guess at least it's a start.
Who would be an influential member of the government that would have a better chance of bringing about change?

19. Unfortunately, we've got Conservatives in charge now.
Our Minister of the Environment is John Baird, but he's not likely to end the seal hunt ("stifling entrepreneurs, don't you know).

Your best bet would be David McGuinty <McGuinty.D@parl.gc.ca> (Liberal "shadow" cabinet minister for the Environment and brother to the Liberal Ontario Premier) and a local Ottawanian.

10. The harp seal population remains stable since last time I looked
Edited on Tue Mar-03-09 10:28 PM by Eryemil
Why not focus on all the, horribly hideous, extremely engendered species for a change?
It turns my stomach, the violence if nothing else. But otherwise I remain annoyed that people only seem to care about the 'cute and furry' animals while much more important organisms, whose destruction threatens their entire ecosystem, are forgotten.

13. You're right - except...
many of us who care about one animal care about them all. I often post things about endangered animals, barbaric hunting rituals and animal cruelty - today it just happens to be seals because this is such a horrific act. I'd like to see far, far greater emphasis on better treatment and care of all animals in this world and more programs to help those who are endangered, so I just do my little part to make that happen.

15. I understand.
It's just a personal pet peeve. I did not mean to come off so hostile.

What baffles me is the method they use to kill the cubs.
I understand the desire for furs, but isn't there a better way to harvest them?
There has to be a compromise between efficiency and the method currently used.

16. I have never heard any justification of their methods.
And I have to wonder what kind of person could ever do something like that? It's mind-boggling.

And, no worries, you didn't come off as hostile - and you had a very good point!

18. I have a very aversive emotional reaction as well
I always try to examine things rationally of course but we humans are hardly rational beings.

The problems is that we cannot appeal to what does not exist. What might provoke an emotional, empathic response in us will not move others.
So it's either a logical argument or nothing and logic fails us here.

17. I applaud that.
The tricky thing about morality though, is that it is not universal.
Most of the time it might appear so, until you're in a moral minority and then you realize just how out of sync the ideals between two groups can be.

I would say for most of the people in the world (and Canadians specifically, since they've failed to ban it) it is just not as much of an issue.
How it can be made relevant to them is something else altogether.

20. Baby seal killing in Canada?
How about getting some info before repeating misinformation.

"We continue to see ... images of white coat seals (the killing of which) have been illegal since 1987," he said. "They sensationalize, they take steps beyond manipulation."

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Science/2008/04/02/5171431-ap.html?cid=ETF

I guess seals are just soo much cuter than Irakis.

22. You can blame me for the picture of the white seal above. But I also don't trust Loyola Sullivan.
Loyola Sullivan's job is to see to it that the seal hunt isn't restricted in any way. In reality, the seal hunt takes place over a short period of time and there are a limited number of seals for a large number of hunters - since outside access to the hunt isn't allowed (raising questions right there) how do we know pups aren't being slaughtered too? And is it ok to barbarically slaughter them if they are the right color and age? No, it's wrong no matter what color or age they are and should be stopped.

As for your comment on the people of Iraq - why does it have to be either/or? Both situations are barbaric and should be stopped immediately.
