i really do not want to think about how many years i've been smoking, i know i need to quit because i know i will die from a smoking related illness eventually, you would think having 2 grandparents die from emphysema would be enough of a kick in the ass wouldn't you? Sadly it has not been.

The addiction to needing to be right...

at the expense of needing someone to be wrong.

It's all the most pervasive one, IMO.

I know this because I have a 4 pack a day habit and I can't break it.

I've tried going cold turkey, but it didn't help. Hunting turkeys in the winter is no substitute

26. I would say that the nicotine in cigarettes is the most difficult to break.
That's because it's been widely documented and proven that the tobacco companies have spent decades researching how to make people more addicted to nicotine.

Cigarettes contain dozens of chemical additives all with the intent to increase the body's absorption of nicotine and, thus, the dependence.

Peddlers of other drugs, like heroin, crack, and cocaine, figure out ways to weaken their product but give their clients just enough of a high to keep coming back.

30. The web & food.
just got over a lifelong addiction to tv.

I got a new lcd tv and it wasn't hooked up right for a couple of days. By the time it was up and running I'm not interested now.
weird and ironic.

but surfing the web... and good food...... don't think I'll ever break those little vices.

Fortunately there's exercise.... and I make my living on over the internet.

I know that it is for some people. But I don't understand why. It's a habit I kicked with ease many years ago.

34. As a former smoker and drug user, I have to say that the hardest thing for me was/is:
food.

Hands down.

I could have quit smoking 1000 times over for every pound I've ever lost.

That's why I just love it when people on DU glibly say things like, "oh, just eat less and exercise more, and it will come right off!" It's like telling a heroin or meth addict, well, just think happy thoughts and go for walks with your dog and you'll be able to kick it, no problem! Ridiculous...

35. Definitely nicotine, if you're hooked.
I went through detox last summer. I had no wish for anything to drink, but would have given just about anything for a cigarette... :smoke:

40. Simple: overeating
You can live without cigarettes, heroin, cocaine, prescription drugs, sex and alcohol, so you can do the very simple control method of SIMPLY NOT TOUCHING THEM EVER. Food, on the other hand, you must somehow make your peace with and regulate.

As a very heavy and thoroughly addicted smoker, I made the cold-blooded pronouncement to myself that, to survive, I simply must never, EVER have any part of a cigarette again. It wasn't easy, but it was a clear decision and much as I was nuts for awhile, it worked. Food I need...
