EU court attacks GM crop secrecy (yea!)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7896813.stm

Europe's top court has ruled that EU governments have no right to conceal the location of field trials of genetically modified (GM) crops.

The court in Luxembourg ruled on Tuesday that "information relating to the location of the release can in no case be kept confidential".

On Monday, the European Commission failed in a bid to force the governments of France and Greece to allow Monsanto's GM corn to be grown in their countries.

Opponents of GM crops say more scientific data is needed, arguing that their long-term genetic impact on humans and wildlife could be harmful.

1. Haven't Countries figured out yet that the real purpose of secrecy is
to conceal what would clearly be unwelcome (and perhaps even harmful) if it became known?

Just so, citizens need to be very concern when their so-called "representative government" wants to use "secrecy" to conceal what it is doing. Conceal from whom and for what purpose?

2. Secrecy had been sought
to help prevent holligans aka heroes from destroying the crops at night.

BTW - there is no avenue of appeal against that decision. That's it !

3. neighboring county has GM corn
and each section of the field is labeled with big signs indicating which batch it is. It's interesting to see the variation in height, size, color and yield.

4. Are they still taking the feelings of plants into effect...

On the question of genetic modification, most of the panel argued that the dignity of plants could be safeguarded "as long as their independence, i.e., reproductive ability and adaptive ability, are ensured." In other words: It's wrong to genetically alter a plant and render it sterile.
