Why the fuck are three men talking about abortion on MSNBC?
Edited on Thu Mar-05-09 05:44 PM by Hello_Kitty
It's not that I don't think men are entitled to an opinion on abortion but this looks really bad and it's really pissing me off. Some guy from Slate Magazine just informed me that if I don't want to get pregnant I should use contraception. No shit Sherlock. He calls himself a "moderate". Now we have Ken Blackwell claiming that using birth control undermines the "human will".

Tweety says he "understands both sides". Wants to know "what we do with people who have sex with no intention of taking the baby to term".

Blackwell: "We are winning this debate because medical technology lets people see their babies."

Slate guy: "Abstinence only doesn't work." He's open to discussion about sex ed programs. Very generous of you. Stresses responsible precautions. Roger.

Blackwell: Crazy shit about da life of da baybees.

Argh. :banghead:

Oh jesus god, Blackwell says he's done "sidewalk counseling".

Tweety doesn't think abortion to be used as birth control.

44. Oh they're out there
But frankly, I don't think they deserve airtime on this either.

This really isn't an issue with two legitimate sides. If you don't believe in abortion, it's simple: don't have one. Just as with the issue of same-sex marriage, you ought not to be allowed to impinge on someone else's basic rights because they offend your sensibilities. You control your own behavior, and that's the extent of it.

Now, working toward making abortions less needed? That is the place everyone get meet. But by giving equal weight to those who would strip women of a very, very basic right - as if that's in any way a legitimately held position? That's wrong.

8. Notice the way Tweety frames that
The contraception part is entirely the woman's responsibility. Unless her partner is deciding not to carry that baby to term.

And then he continues with his proposition that all sorts of people (just say it, Tweety, women) are not bothering with contraception, and are just la dee dah using abortion as contraception. Back that up with hard numbers, bub, or STFU.

Very telling little panel there. Says it all about how much women and women's lives are considered in this debate.

and it is done because of ignorance about birth control. Geez I know many women who were in the 30 to 45 year old age range when they had abortions.

Or crappy living conditions. Or medical problems.

It's always as if it's a "hmmm, cereal for breakfast today or eggs? And, gee, maybe I'll have an abortion later" sort of decision.

Because women are just stupid and irresponsible, and are just dying to go through an abortion.

The obsession some men have with abortion is incredible - unless we remember that it's the fastest way to reach the heart of obsessed male abortion haters - and keep their vote ... makes them feel like Republicans only - pay attention to abortion.

If anyone knows of a professional succinct analysis of the abortion obsession, please let me have a link or a paragraph or two. I need to understand some people I know better.

39. Here's an interesting blog post about issues liberal men have with abortion
It's not scientific or academic, but I thought the initial post and some of the responses were kinda interesting.

As for conservative men, I hate to be simplistic but I really think it stems from patriarchy and authoritarianism. They've been raised to believe that pregnancy is the result of their potent and magic sperm. How dare the bitch reject it??!? Sorry, not real professional but that's what I think.

The propaganda whores sold out completely during the war crimes years of Chimpleton, they have no credibility left so they try to sell their little dramas in hopes that the viewers will try to soothe their tensions by buying the advertisers goods. The entire mode of media is worthless and corrupt except for the weather, which was also ignored by the war criminals during Katrina.

I would like to ask all three of those assholes if they've ever had unprotected sex. Were they married at the time of the unprotected sex? If not, what happened? I'd also like to ask them when it was they found themselves carrying an unintentional pregnancy.

"Sidewalk counseling", huh? I could say something really crass and crude here, but I will restrain myself. Suffice it to say that I'll bet there isn't one of the three of them that could tell me they've never had unprotected sex, but they'll tell all women what they can do with their bodies?

Seriously - with all the other major, complex problems we have to deal with, they're getting down and rolling around in the mud about abortion. That was something to fight about when the economy was good.

31. Well, if men really wanted to prevent pregnancy...
they have 2 hands. When I read about this type of crap, or confront it in person, this is my response: 'if you don't even want to entertain the idea that a woman might have an abortion, you have 2 hands, and have sex with yourself only.' Followed by, 'if you do have sex with a woman and it results in a pregnancy that she doesn't want, but the government insists on it, then the government will have the right to neuter you, right?'

I'm amazed that the spokespeople for the concerned women for America, and other anti-choice groups are men. Can the women who belong to these groups not speak for themselves??? Why do they have males speaking for them?????

And why in the hell did Tweety do a show like this with only men?!!!!

53. Not to excuse Tweety, but here's his rationale...
He found this guy who wrote an article expressing a moderate view. You know, sex education, make birth control available, to limit the need for abortions, yada, yada. So then he brings Blackwell on, right wing idiot, so they can find "common ground" ignoring the fact that fundies don't want to find common ground; they want to ban sex. Tweety thinks he can facilitate some middle of the road view that will placate the fundies and reduce the need for abortions. This was stupid.

Again, I don't excuse Tweety because he neglected to bring in a woman who could tell them all, "It's none of your goddam business if I want to get an abortion."
