KS repuke complains that no one earning 2.65 an hour comes to testify in favor of raising min. wage
Thursday, March 5, 2009
Schwab Flippant about the Plight of Kansas Workers

In today's hearing over the state minimum wage, Republican State Representative Scott Schwab was upset no one who actually makes the state's minimum wage of $2.65 attended the hearing today to plea for a pay raise.

There is an obvious reason, of course, none of the 20,000 Kansans who work for less than the federal minimum wage attended the 9 a.m. hearing: THEY ALL HAVE HOURLY JOBS.

<skip>

When reminded of that fact by another member of the committee, Rep. Schwab suggested if the proponents of a wage increase would bring 50 people paid the state minimum wage to the committee, he would personally, out of his own pocket, make up the lost wages for those willing to testify.

So nice of Schwab to offer- though, since we're talking the good state representative's weekly budget for Starbucks and razors for his shiny bald head, he's probably not that worried about $140 odd bucks he might have to fork out.

2. Asshats who support the paltry minimum wage
should be forced to live on it for six months, maybe a year. They'd be raising it mighty quick.

5.  $2.65 per hour? Is that a mistake? I had a part time job in
the sixties that paid me $4.00 an hour.

8. As late as 1970 the Federal minium wage was $1.30
I remember, that's what I was getting paid. Then I got a part time job at a union grocery store that paid $2.07 an hour. I was a senior in high school and was awed by my sudden wealth.

The really sad thing is, people could eke out a living at minimum wage then - not a great one - but enough to keep a roof over over head and food on the table.

The clown who thinks a $2.65 minimum wage is adequate should be forced to live on it for just a couple months. Maybe he'd change his tune.

11.  My 13 yo grandaughter earns $10.00 and hour baby sitting.
It boggles the mind.

After reading your post I realize my $4.00 an hour was pretty good for the sixties.

6. OOOO he's opening himself up to a BIG payment
I just bet at least one person of that group would get fired for taking the time off.

Is he willing to cover their pay through their retirement age at their current employer? Because if they lost their job for going to speak to the committee, and he promised publicly to cover their wages....

17. Doesn't the Federal wage overrule this anyhow?
Here in Jersey our state minimum always met or exceeded the Federal while I was running my theater, so I never really had a conflict between the two. Can a state really allow employers to pay less than the Federal minimum wage?

19. Natural Selection
Not a contest, but the biggest ones rise to to the top, the smaller ones post on FR, and some, like me, get better and come here. They purge people like Stalin for ideological impurity.

23. I just forwarded this story to one of my friends in ACORN here in FL
to have ACORN go after this bastard and make him have to pony up the dough - let him experience his own little Michelle Bachmann moment but this time out of his own pocket instead campaign coffers. I'd love to see him have to cough up that kind of dough for calling out poor people like that.
