Marta and I have 2 rat terriers and a german short haired Pointer. Sweetie came from a broken home. Her leg was broken before she was rescued. She was a HSUS success story of the week in Oct. of 07. This was a fair outcome for domestic violence in our book.

Man gets jail, probation for hitting dog with golf club

A Bellevue man whose rat terrier died after he struck it with a golf club was sentenced this morning to 24 months probation and 30 days in jail.

Carson Smith Sr., 41, was ordered to serve the 30 days on weekends in the Sarpy County Jail. Because of the conviction, Smith also will have to retire from the Air Force, said his attorney, James Martin Davis.

Smith, a flight chief, has been in the service for 23 years.

Smith could have received up to a year in jail for cruelly mistreating an animal, a misdemeanor. He pleaded no contest to the charge.

Sarpy County Judge Jeffrey Funke said, "This is a serious case. The dog’s life was taken needlessly."

Funke received several letters from Smith’s co-workers in support of him. Funke also received a few letters from animal rights activists calling for a stiff sentence.
