Just because the memos claim a right to manipulate the media doesn't prove they actually did so.

But remember back when we learned that the New York Times had withheld information from the public about Georege W. Bush's illegal NSA spy program because they (supposedly) didn't want the truth to stain Bush's reelection bid? That does.

And those same memos make one wonder about that Karl Rove indictment that never was, don't they? If a president has the ultimate say in all national security matters, does he not have the right to say who can and cannot be prosecuted for outing national security assets? Of course he does. And nobody is allowed to know about it.

1. Armstrong Williams.
Does anyone remember that?

GAO Blasts Illegal Propaganda Campaign at the U.S. Department of Education: "Today, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) ruled that the Bush Department of Education illegally used taxpayer dollars to fund a covert propaganda campaign, aimed at boosting the image of the President's education agenda...The GAO found that the Education Department violated the "publicity and propaganda" law by making payments to the journalist Armstrong Williams and by paying a public relations firm to produce fake television news stories promoting the President's education programs. For both violations, the GAO directed the Department of Education to invoke the Federal Anti-Deficiency Act to begin the process of recovering the misspent taxpayer dollars."

4. Retired generals: Pentagon military analyst program
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Pentagon_military_analyst_program

"Internal Pentagon documents repeatedly refer to the military analysts as 'message force multipliers' or 'surrogates' who could be counted on to deliver administration 'themes and messages' to millions of Americans 'in the form of their own opinions.' ... Don Meyer, an aide to Ms. Clarke, said a strategic decision was made in 2002 to make the analysts the main focus of the public relations push to construct a case for war." Clarke and her senior aide, Brent T. Krueger, eventually signed up more than 75 retired military officers, who appeared on television and radio news shows as military analysts, and/or penned newspaper op/ed columns. The Pentagon held weekly meetings with the military analysts, which continued as of April 2008, when David Barstow reported on the program in the New York Times. <1>

5. They spied on Rubin and his wife Christina Amanpour during Kerry's campaign
when Rubin was advising Kerry. I would bet my 401K on it.

7. We already know they manipulated the media.
But claiming the right to do so is scandal enough, don't you think?
