Madoff may be moving toward plea dealBY ANTHONY M. DESTEFANO | anthony.destefano@newsday.com
March 5, 2009
Accused Wall Street scammer Bernard Madoff again finds himself waiting to see whether he will be indicted or get a plea bargain, as his next court date of March 13 approaches.

Speculation that Madoff, 70, might be closer to a plea deal in a suspected $50-billion Ponzi scheme arose yesterday when a special court hearing about a potential conflict of interest with his lawyer was quickly postponed, just hours after federal prosecutors in Manhattan had requested it.

A federal court official said that the issue was adjourned without a new date.

March 13 is the latest deadline for prosecutors to get an indictment or hold a preliminary hearing on the original federal complaint filed on Dec. 11.

3. I think it's more him giving up his fight.

You are just about always going to get something for saving the courts time and money.

2. What would that monster have to offer in a plea?
He belongs in jail and his wife in another. She is as guilty as Bonnie Parker (Bonnie and Clyde).

6. I Doubt He'll Walk...
If anything, staying behind bars may be the safest place for good ole Bernie over the next few years...there are a lot of pissed off former investors there (some with some ugly Russian names) that may be looking for more than a refund.

Bernie's far from getting off on this thing. At 70, he can plea down by giving up names and opening his books that could lead to a lot more convictions. I get the feeling this dude would sell out anyone, even his wife, to get reduced time. Either way, at his age, going to jail for even 10 years is like a death sentence.

Also, the moment he cops the plea and admits guilt, the floodgates will open on lawsuits from former investors. As I say, this dude won't sleep easy for a long time. As far as his wife...when those creditors come calling, she won't be able to shelter much. Damn that community property thing.

Cheers...

5. Jail TIme
This guys obviously knew what he was doing and was pretty smart. It seems that money gets too your head though and think you're invincible. Did he really think he was going to get away with it? This guy definitely needs to be put in the slammer.
