American Anti-Gay Leaders hold seminar in country where being gay can get a person executed
Edited on Fri Mar-06-09 12:03 PM by ck4829
A bizarre trio of American anti-gay leaders arrived in the Ugandan capital of Kampala Thursday to stage a three-day seminar, “Exposing the Truth Behind Homosexuality and the Homosexual Agenda,” in a country where homosexuality is a crime punishable by death. They are:

• Scott Lively, co-founder of the hate group Watchmen on the Walls and author of The Pink Swastika, a pseudo-history book claiming that “militant male homosexuals” helped mastermind the holocaust.

• Caleb Lee Brundidge, a “sexual reorientation coach” for the International Healing Foundation, whose signature technique, as demonstrated on CNN, involves patients “beating on chairs with tennis rackets and screaming, “Mom, Mom, why did you do this to me?” Brundidge also counsels men struggling with their sexuality to visit mortuaries with a fringe Charismatic ministry team to “practice raising the dead.”

• Don Schmierer, a board member for Exodus International, an international umbrella group covering hundreds of “ex-gay” ministries. Schmierer warns parents in his guide to preventing homosexuality to watch out for boys who show “extreme macho behavior” are “frail, deformed, deaf” or “avoid fights/physical altercations.”

According to Steven Langa, executive director of the Family Life Network, the New York-based Christian right advocacy group that organized the seminar, Lively, Brundidge and Schmierer were called to Uganda because gay activists in that county are recruiting children to homosexuality.

That justification seems farcical, considering that death threats and the fear of state-sanctioned execution have forced gay rights activists in the African country underground. Since 1990, homosexuality in Uganda has been a capital crime.

4. Scott Lively, as I live and breathe!
I wondered what happened to him. Oregonians may remember him as Lon Mabon's lieutenant in the Great Culture Wars of the late 1980s-early 1990s. The last I heard, he had fled the state one step ahead of some kind of investigation into the Oregon Citizens' Alliance financial irregularities. Nice to see that time has not diminished nor age tainted his infinite capacity for lying bigotry.

5. It might also be because he physically attacked a photojournalist in 1991

"Justice, even when long delayed, is always sweet, and this week Catherine Stauffer is relishing it.

In October 1991, during the heat of the battle over Ballot Measure 9, Stauffer was covering the premiere of an anti-gay video at the Foursquare Church in Southeast Portland for Just Out newspaper. She was spotted by Scott Lively, the burly mouthpiece of the Oregon Citizens Alliance. He wasn't exactly glad to see her.

"He picked me up, threw me into a wall and dragged me out into the street," says Stauffer.

In 1992, she sued Lively and the OCA over the incident and won a $20,000 settlement from Lively and another $10,000 from the OCA."

I remember reading about this a while ago and I was thinking why did Lively never get thrown in jail for this? He must have fled, I guess.

6. That's what it was
Lively likes his targets weak and defenseless, so it's no surprise that he'll be preaching where he's not likely to encounter any opposition. It appears that there's still a sufficient market for hate that he can earn a living at it.
