OMFG: Recruiting agency asks ME for job tips...

Honest to God, this is straight out of my inbox this afternoon:

If THEY don't have good job leads then what the hell do they think they deserve a percentage for? I'm gonna give the whole world a good job tip and cut them in for 30-40% in exchange for a TV?

:eyes:

My response:

If I personally knew of a hiring manager who was hiring right now I wouldn’t be sharing that information with the whole world, I’d be applying there myself.

Subject: Follow Up From Staff IT

Hi Douglas,

I wanted to send you another message about or Applicant Appreciation Program. Some of our applicants replied to our last email asking for our help in finding them their next job. One of the ways we can help is by turning back to you, our applicants.

If everyone were to refer a manager who may be hiring right now we would be able to place more of you, your friends and family in new jobs. Obviously, we are a business as well and every referral helps us but there is no reason that we all can’t work together in these turbulent economic times.
We are glad to offer you incentives for referring a manager who ultimately hires a consultant from Staff IT. We are giving away Flat Panel TV’s, Computers, iPod Touch, Training Classes, Certifications and more.

Now is the time we all need to assist each other. I appreciate your time and help.

Thank you for your time.

Best Wishes,

3. I get those too
I would have to admit I hope the temp staffing firms, contractor pimps and recruiting consultants DON'T survive the Bush Depression.

6. I've used them most of my career but they (the good ones) know better
than to ask the candidates for job leads in tough times because it makes them (the agencies) look like losers who don't really have anything to offer.

4. recruiters have been doing this scam for YEARS
some years ago, when i was desperately and aggressively job hunting, i got contacted by an agency that will go unnamed, saying they had seen my resume, blah blah, had some great opportunities to talk to me about.

so i get all professionaled-up and drive on down (spending precious money on gas).

the bottom feeding douche who summoned me, presented me with 2 vague descriptions of supposed "jobs" that were not in my areas of expertise and not in the pay range i realistically sought. when i responded appropriately ("spending any time or effort pursuing these 'opportunities' is a waste"), i got the "well, then, can you help us out by referring leads to us?"

and got phone calls and emails out the gazoo for months with the same "got any leads?" bs.

these losers make the guys in Glengarry Glen Ross look almost ethical.

5. SOP for most "search firms"
Here's another one...

Where have you been looking. What kind of job were you applying for? Who did you talk to?

Please let us know where you have already applied so that we won't cross paths with you.

Why ask this really? So that they can compile a list of potential employers that they can then market prospects to.

7. And I give them a "not on a need to know basis" answer..
I did recruiting for a while back in 1993-1994 when I was first starting out in engineering.

9. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
Some people on that list might need people.
