A Thousand Drops
After Brian has brushed his teeth, after he has swallowed a fistful of pills, after he has injected Neupogen into the fraction of fat he can pinch from his belly, he dons a pair of pajamas and says, “I’m ready to get plugged in.” He means he’s ready for me to connect him to the Flo-Gard, a small computerized machine that’s clamped onto the IV pole beside our bed. Every night for eight hours, a rich, synthetic liquid called total parenteral nutrition is infused into his bloodstream, fattening every cell. Or so we keep hoping. Brian developed a resistance to antiretroviral medication after volunteering for drug trials in the 1980s, and now infusions are the last treatment left to slow his rapid weight loss from AIDS.
