Cornyn: No more fights if Democrats get 60 votes
@ 12:45 pm by Michael O'Brien

There will be no more tense congressional fights over the budget and other issues if Democrats pick up another Senate seat in 2010, National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman John Cornyn (R-Texas) warned this weekend.

"Should Harry Reid and the Democrats gain their 60th vote in next year’s election, they will have a filibuster-proof majority, and Washington will officially become a one-party town run solely by the Democrats," Cornyn wrote in an op-ed for a conservative news site. "Republicans would be powerless to stop even the most flawed pieces of legislation."

Cornyn, who faces a tall task in 2010 by defending open Republican seats in bellwether states, said that Republicans would be unable to force Democratic leaders to pull bills — as happened this week — should Democrats attain a filibuster-proof majority.

"If Harry Reid gets his 60th vote, there will be no more fights like the one we saw {Thursday}," he wrote. "Democrats will have the ability to ram through legislation loaded with massive government spending and personal pet projects, driving our economy in the wrong direction and our country further into debt. "

1. They were ok with the idea of a one-party town when they had the reins.

3. Why apologize? I want a one party country.
Republican opposition is just obstruction of needed reforms that need to be implemented in these perilous times.

7. They never had a filibuster proof majority. The dems just didn't stand up
except for some judicial appointments. They were just better on the spin.

8. Isn't this also a tacit Republican admission that...
Franken has it won in Minnesota? Cornyn speaks of getting a 60th vote. Al represents number 59.

The notion that we have to have 60 votes carry anything in the Senate...which is already an anti-democratic (small d) institution, as it gives equal power to the citizens of Rhode Island and California...infuriates me.

Is there no way to actually FORCE the minority to ACTUALLY go to all the work of ACTUALLY filibustering? That would be great to see THIS year.

18. "massive government spending and personal pet projects"
.... you mean like the GOP's own Bridge to Nowhere, the No-Bid Contracts in Iraq and the massive, massive spending on an 8-year long illegal invasion that essentially got us where we are now, budgetarily speaking ??

Pot. Meet Kettle. Jebus! :spank:

19. You know what? The way the Congressional Democrats run things, I'll bet
they could have 90 seats, and the Republicans could still push them around.
