Hickory Shooting May Have Been Self-Defense

HICKORY, N.C. -- Police in Hickory are trying to figure out if a shooting early Friday morning was a case of self-defense.
That shooting happened at a home on Fifth Avenue Southwest around 4:30 a.m.
Police said Terry Lee Atkins was shot in the chest and then went to two homes nearby looking for help. Investigators believe Atkins may have gone to a home with a .12-gauge shotgun to rob the people inside, but was instead met with gunfire. The homeowners said they had no choice.
Investigators recovered a shotgun dropped in a nearby yard.

7. I guess...

...that the point could be (and strengthened by your links) that evil, gun toting assholes are out there with bad intent and it is better to be prepared when one of these people enter your house.

However, on this site it seems to be the prevailing logic that guns themselves are evil. Many seem to think that without guns, all the world would be safe. It might be 'safer'...but with humans around, nothing is ever safe.


For the record, I do not own guns and have never hunted. I protect my house with thorny bushes outside all windows and 2 loud dogs inside.

5. It sounds like the badguy didn't do so well.

I wonder if this was going to be one of those times where the badguy makes the husband watch while he rapes the wife. Then kills them both. He was certainly prepared for it.
It will be a while before he again makes the decision to prey on people who just want to be safe in their home.

No telling what may have happened inside that home if the guy had gotten in with the shotgun and the homeowners were not able to defend themselves.
